Congress MLA's Ancestral Property Wall Demolished in Kapurthala Amid High Drama
In a dramatic confrontation that unfolded in Ramgarh village of Kapurthala district, the panchayat department demolished a wall belonging to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira's ancestral house on Monday. The operation was conducted under heavy police presence, leading to intense protests and allegations of political vendetta.
Standoff and Demolition Under Police Supervision
The demolition action triggered significant resistance from Khaira, who sat in front of the JCB machine to block the operation. A prolonged standoff ensued as the MLA argued with officials while his supporters gathered at the site, raising slogans against the state government. The confrontation lasted for several minutes until police personnel eventually removed Khaira from the scene, allowing the demolition to proceed.
Kapurthala Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Toora arrived at the location to personally supervise the operation. Khaira later accused SSP Toora of overseeing what he described as a deployment of "brute police force" during the controversial demolition.
Allegations of Political Vendetta and Legal Threats
Khaira immediately characterized the demolition as a "blatant case of political vendetta" orchestrated at the behest of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The Congress MLA live-streamed the entire episode, including his exchanges with officials and the actual demolition, which he described as the "dangerous introduction of bulldozer politics in Punjab" under directions from CM Mann and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal.
During the live broadcast, Khaira repeatedly questioned Block Development and Panchayat Officer Kulwinder Singh about why no demolition notice had been served to him personally. The BDPO maintained that the notice had been issued to the panchayat, while Khaira countered that Sarpanch Dharminder, who was present at the site, had denied receiving any such notice.
Conflicting Accounts and Documentation Dispute
The controversy deepened with conflicting accounts about the notice serving process. BDPO Kulwinder Singh, contacted later in the evening, insisted that the demolition process had been underway "for quite a few days" and that proper notice had been served to both the sarpanch and the panchayat. He claimed the sarpanch had refused to accept the notice, stating "We have everything on the file" as evidence of due process.
Khaira vehemently disputed these claims, asserting that the demolished wall was part of his family's ancestral home where they had resided for more than 200 years. The Congress MLA stated he possesses complete documentary proof of ownership and emphasized that the action was taken without providing him any opportunity to present his case or be heard.
Legal Action and Broader Political Context
Announcing his intention to pursue legal recourse, Khaira revealed plans to approach the Punjab and Haryana High Court against what he termed the "illegal demolition." He vowed to hold "all guilty police and civil officials" accountable through the judicial process.
The MLA framed the incident within a broader pattern of political targeting, alleging it represents the latest in a series of "false cases, arrests and imprisonment" aimed at silencing his criticism of the AAP government in Punjab. The demolition has escalated political tensions in the state, highlighting ongoing conflicts between opposition figures and the ruling administration.
As the situation develops, the incident raises significant questions about property rights, due process in demolition actions, and the intersection of political rivalry with administrative decisions in Punjab's current political landscape.
