Congress MLA Slams BJP for Alleged Politicization of Elephant Attack Deaths in Kodagu
Congress leader and Virajpet MLA AS Ponnanna has launched a scathing attack against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing them of engaging in political opportunism over recent tragic deaths caused by elephant attacks in the Kodagu district of Karnataka. Speaking to reporters in Madikeri on Saturday, Ponnanna expressed deep sorrow over the three fatalities reported in Bettathur, Siddapur, and Kushalnagar, while condemning what he described as the BJP's threat to stage protests rather than contribute to meaningful solutions.
State Government Actions and Past Comparisons
Ponnanna emphasized that the state government has already initiated concrete steps to address the escalating human-elephant conflict. A high-level meeting was convened under the leadership of the Forest Minister to discuss and implement preventive measures. The Congress MLA pointedly questioned the BJP's track record, asking what action their functionaries had taken when similar deaths occurred during the tenure of BJP MLAs in Kodagu. "More deaths took place during that period, but the Congress, then in opposition, did not resort to politics over death or demand resignations," he stated, highlighting a contrast in political conduct.
Criticism of Central Funding and Alleged Neglect
The criticism extended to the central government's funding policies. Ponnanna revealed that although Rs 290 crore was allocated under the Elephant Scheme and Tiger Scheme, Karnataka has not received any direct financial assistance specifically for elephant menace control. He noted that neighboring Kerala has received substantial support, raising questions about equitable distribution. The MLA claimed that Kodagu has supported the BJP for nearly 25 years, yet the Centre has failed to adequately address the district's persistent problems with wildlife conflicts.
According to Ponnanna, an additional Rs 298 crore is urgently required for effective preventive measures. He further alleged that 70% of funds under central wildlife schemes remain unspent, urging the BJP to focus on securing these resources instead of leveling allegations. "The BJP should work to secure these funds rather than making baseless accusations," he asserted.
Current Measures and Condemnation of Protest Conduct
On the ground, Ponnanna assured that the forest department has been equipped with vehicles and other necessary facilities. Work to identify and capture troublesome elephants is ongoing, and he promised that action would be taken against any forest officials found negligent in their duties.
The Congress leader also condemned alleged misconduct during recent protests, including incidents of disrespect towards a woman officer and attempts to prevent the removal of a dead body. "Such behavior is unacceptable and detracts from the seriousness of the issue," he remarked, calling for dignified and constructive engagement.
Ponnanna's statements underscore a growing political rift over environmental and safety issues in Kodagu, with the Congress positioning itself as focused on practical solutions while accusing the BJP of exploiting tragedy for political gain. The debate highlights the complex interplay between wildlife conservation, community safety, and political accountability in regions prone to human-animal conflicts.
