Congress MP Proposes 'Chola Railways' Corridor Along Tamil Nadu's 1,076-Km Coastline
Congress Member of Parliament from Mayiladuthurai, R Sudha, has formally written to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, advocating for the establishment of a new 'East Coast Railway' corridor. This ambitious project would span the entire 1,076-kilometer coastline of Tamil Nadu, stretching from Pulicat near Chennai all the way down to Kanyakumari.
Honoring Maritime Heritage with 'Chola Railways'
In her proposal, Sudha suggested naming the railway line 'Chola Railways' to honor and celebrate the rich maritime legacy of the historic Chola dynasty. The Cholas were renowned for their naval prowess and extensive trade networks across the Indian Ocean, making this name a fitting tribute to the region's heritage.
Connecting Coastal Communities and Key Districts
The proposed coastal railway corridor is designed to connect numerous coastal cities, towns, and fishing settlements that currently lack uninterrupted rail access along the shoreline. The line would pass through 14 coastal districts, including:
- Thiruvallur
- Chengalpattu
- Mayiladuthurai
- Nagapattinam
- Tiruvarur
- Thanjavur
- Thoothukudi
- Tirunelveli
This extensive coverage aims to bridge the connectivity gap for these regions, which currently rely heavily on road transport.
Boosting Pilgrimage Tourism and Economic Activity
One of the key benefits highlighted by Sudha is improved access to major pilgrimage centers. The corridor would facilitate travel to sites such as Rameswaram, Velankanni church, and Nagore dargah, which attract millions of devotees from across India annually. 'Devotees could board a train and travel along the coast to reach Rameswaram instead of depending on multiple road or rail connections,' she explained, emphasizing the convenience and potential boost to religious tourism.
Additionally, the coastline hosts significant fishing infrastructure, including three major fishing harbours, three medium fishing harbours, and 363 fish landing centres. The railway is expected to enhance marine trade and logistics, providing a more efficient means of transporting seafood and other goods. It could also support the movement of defence personnel and materials along the coast when necessary, adding a strategic dimension to the project.
Historical Context and Current Challenges
Southern Railway officials noted that coastal rail projects have been proposed in the past but faced significant hurdles. For instance, the 179-kilometer Chennai–Cuddalore line via Mamallapuram and Puducherry was proposed in the mid-2000s but was stalled due to funding issues and a lack of cost-sharing agreements. As a result, coastal districts continue to depend largely on road corridors like the East Coast Road, while rail connectivity remains inland and fragmented.
Sudha's proposal seeks to address these historical challenges by presenting a comprehensive vision for a unified coastal railway network. The 'Chola Railways' initiative aims not only to improve transportation but also to stimulate economic growth, enhance tourism, and preserve cultural heritage along Tamil Nadu's picturesque coastline.
