Congress Faces Internal Rebellion in Punalur as DCC Leader Announces Independent Candidacy
The United Democratic Front (UDF) is confronting renewed turmoil in the Punalur constituency, with dissent resurfacing prominently within the Congress ranks. District Congress committee (DCC) general secretary Sanjay Khan has declared his intention to contest as an independent candidate, vehemently protesting the party's decision to withdraw its rebel candidate and allocate the seat to the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
Sanjay Khan's Defiance and Nomination Plans
Sanjay Khan has publicly stated that he cannot accept the IUML candidate and confirmed his plans to file nomination papers on Monday. This dramatic announcement follows the Punalur seat being once again allotted to the IUML, a move that has ignited significant internal conflict. Khan alleged that the seat was handed over to the IUML with the intention of losing it, asserting that he cannot support such a strategy. He further claimed that the seat was initially promised to him but was later taken away, warning that if the seat is given to the IUML, the Congress will disintegrate in Punalur.
Background of the Conflict and Party Interventions
The developments stem from the Congress leadership's decision to withdraw rebel candidate Nelson Sebastian, a DCC office-bearer, after interventions by senior leaders including AICC general secretary K C Venugopal and KPCC president Sunny Joseph. However, this withdrawal triggered dramatic scenes during a party meeting held in Punalur on Sunday. Khan expressed strong opposition to the leadership's move, walking out of the meeting despite efforts by party leaders and workers to pacify him. His supporters have already begun campaigning, projecting him as a popular independent candidate and appealing to voters for backing.
Congress's Reconciliation Efforts and Ongoing Tensions
Meanwhile, the Congress has initiated last-minute efforts to bring Khan back into the fold and defuse the escalating tension. The constituency committee has decided to resolve the differences and mobilize support in favor of the IUML candidate. KPCC vice-president P C Vishnunath is actively in touch with Khan to address the evolving crisis within the party. These reconciliation attempts highlight the deep-seated dissent and the challenges the UDF faces in maintaining unity ahead of the elections.
