Congress Unveils Full Candidate List for Puducherry Assembly Elections

In a significant political development, Puducherry Congress president V Vaithilingam has officially released the party's list of 16 candidates for the Union territory's upcoming assembly elections, scheduled for April 9. The announcement marks a crucial step in the Congress's campaign strategy as it prepares to contest the polls in alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).

Key Contests and Candidate Details

V Vaithilingam, a two-term former chief minister of Puducherry, will contest from the Thattanchavady constituency. He faces a formidable opponent in N Rangasamy, the founder-president of the All India N.R. Congress (AINRC) and the outgoing chief minister. Rangasamy is seeking a second consecutive term and his fifth overall, making this one of the most closely watched contests in the election.

The Congress has fielded candidates across various constituencies, with the complete list including:

Seat-Sharing Agreement with DMK

The candidate announcement follows the formal seat-sharing agreement between the Congress and the DMK. Under this arrangement, the Congress will contest 16 of the 30 elected seats in the Puducherry assembly, while the DMK will field candidates in the remaining 14 seats. This alliance aims to consolidate opposition votes against the ruling AINRC-BJP coalition.

Political Context and Previous Election Results

In the 2021 assembly elections, the AINRC emerged as the largest party with 10 seats, followed by the DMK with six seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress each won six seats. The BJP is currently an ally of the AINRC, which was founded in February 2011 by N Rangasamy after he left the Congress party.

The Puducherry legislative assembly comprises a total of 33 seats. Of these, 30 members are elected by the public, while the remaining three are nominated by the central government, adding a unique dimension to the territory's political landscape.

With the election date set for April 9, political activities in Puducherry are expected to intensify as parties ramp up their campaigning efforts. The Congress's candidate list release signals the beginning of what promises to be a highly competitive electoral battle in the Union territory.
