Congress Unveils First Candidate List for Vadodara Civic Elections
The Indian National Congress made a significant move on Sunday night by releasing its inaugural list of 18 candidates for the upcoming Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) elections. This announcement marks a strategic step as the party gears up for the local polls, with a focus on strengthening its presence in key wards across the city.
Shrivastava Family Enters the Fray with Notable Nominations
In a notable development, the Congress has fielded two daughters of former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Madhu Shrivastava, expanding the political involvement of the Shrivastava family. Deepa Shrivastava and Neelam Nigam have been nominated from wards 14 and 15, respectively. This adds to the family's representation, as Leader of Opposition in the VMC, Chandrakant Shrivastava, popularly known as Bhattu, is also contesting from his stronghold in ward 16. With these nominations, three members of the extended Shrivastava family are now in the electoral race, all competing from different wards in the eastern parts of Vadodara, thereby consolidating their influence in local politics.
Intriguing Family Dynamics and Party Crossovers
Interestingly, the Shrivastava family showcases a unique political divide. Despite being cousins, Madhu Shrivastava has long been associated with the BJP, while Chandrakant Shrivastava has remained a stalwart of the Congress. This rivalry adds an intriguing layer to the upcoming elections, as family members contest from opposing parties. The Congress's list also includes former BJP councillors Ashish Joshi and Parul Patel, both fielded from ward 15 after being suspended by the BJP earlier. This move highlights the party's strategy to attract experienced figures from rival camps.
Complete Panels and Renominations Strengthen Congress Strategy
The first list covers candidates from 10 different wards, with the Congress announcing complete four-member panels in wards 15 and 16, indicating a focused approach to secure these areas. Corporators from the previous VMC board, Balasaheb alias Balu Surve and Alka Patel, have been renominated from wards 13 and 16, respectively, leveraging their incumbency and local support. Another former corporator, Jagruti Rana, has received a ticket from ward 7, where she was elected in 2015, aiming to reclaim her position.
Diverse Candidates Add Depth to Congress Lineup
Among other notable candidates, Swejal Vyas has been fielded from ward 8. Vyas, who was earlier associated with the Rashtriya Samaj Paksha and the Aam Aadmi Party, gained visibility as a civic activist raising local issues, bringing a grassroots perspective to the Congress ticket. Additionally, Kruti Raval, wife of Congress spokesperson Nishant Raval, has been nominated from ward 3, further diversifying the party's candidate pool.
Challenges in Finalizing Candidates for Key Wards
Meanwhile, the Congress is still in the process of finalizing its candidates for ward 1, which is considered a party bastion. In the last two civic elections, the Congress won all four seats in this ward. However, the reshuffle in caste reservations for seats has complicated the candidate selection process, posing a challenge for the party as it seeks to maintain its dominance in this crucial area.
This comprehensive list reflects the Congress's efforts to build a robust team for the VMC elections, blending family legacies, experienced politicians, and new faces to contest effectively in Vadodara's dynamic political landscape.
