BENGALURU/KALABURAGI: With DK Shivakumar set to be sworn in as Karnataka Chief Minister on Wednesday, the Congress party has shifted gears to assemble a ministerial team, appoint a new president for its state unit, and select members for various boards and corporations.
High Command Meeting in Delhi
The Chief Minister-elect and outgoing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah are scheduled to travel to Delhi on Monday to meet the party high command and finalize the first set of names for the cabinet.
Kharge's Statement on Cabinet Formation
In Kalaburagi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge stated that there have been no discussions yet regarding the creation of a Deputy Chief Minister post or potential candidates for cabinet positions. He clarified that no decision has been made on whether 8 or 10 ministers will be sworn in on Wednesday.
Kharge explained that the cabinet formation will be a two-phase process: the first phase this week, and the second phase within 15 to 30 days. He emphasized that ultimately, it is up to the new Chief Minister to decide the course of action. All such discussions will take place after June 3.
Next KPCC President
Regarding the next Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, Kharge said the party is searching for a new face capable of strengthening the organization. He stressed the need for a suitable person who maintains social and political balance, noting that assembly elections in the state are just 24 months away. "We are looking for a fast-paced, inclusive figure," he added.
Oath-Taking Ceremony Arrangements
DK Shivakumar cited limited seating at Lok Bhavan, the venue of the oath-taking ceremony, and announced that the event will be live-streamed at select locations for party cadre. He said that besides politicians from across the country, state MLAs, former and current MPs, and block and district presidents of the party will attend. Arrangements are being made at the party's two offices—the old address and Queen's Road—to live-stream the ceremony. He apologized to party workers for the limited capacity.
New Congress Office
The CM-designate also mentioned that he has extended an invitation to Kharge and Rahul Gandhi for the foundation-laying ceremony of the Congress office on Race Course Road. He added that another office will be built under the leadership of Ramalinga Reddy on Queens Road. Plans and documentation are being prepared for constructing 100 Congress offices across Karnataka.
