In yet another major jolt to the Congress party in Haryana, former president of the Panchkula municipal council, Manveer Kaur Gill, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. Gill, who had been the Congress candidate from the Kalka constituency in the state assembly elections, formally joined the BJP in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini and state BJP president Mohan Lal Badoli.
Second Senior Leader to Defect
Gill is the second senior Congress leader to leave the party in the midst of campaigning for the Panchkula municipal corporation elections. Just a few days earlier, former Panchkula mayor Upinder Ahluwalia had also switched allegiance to the saffron party. These defections highlight growing discontent within the Congress ranks in the region and signal a strengthening of the BJP's foothold in Haryana's local politics.
Impact on Local Politics
The departure of key leaders like Gill and Ahluwalia could significantly impact the Congress's electoral prospects in the upcoming municipal polls. The BJP, on the other hand, is leveraging these additions to bolster its campaign and expand its support base. Political analysts suggest that such moves may influence voter sentiment and reshape the political landscape in Panchkula and surrounding areas.
As the campaigning intensifies, both parties are expected to focus on local issues, development promises, and candidate appeal to win over the electorate. The defections also underscore the broader trend of political realignments in Haryana, where the BJP has been aggressively courting disgruntled leaders from rival parties.
