Congress Withdraws Candidate in Baramati Bypoll, Clearing Path for Sunetra Pawar
In a dramatic political development, the Congress party withdrew its candidate against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and deputy chief minister Sunetra Pawar in the Baramati bye-election on Thursday. The decision came just an hour before the deadline for nomination withdrawals, following intense lobbying by the Pawar family and Mahayuti alliance partners.
Political Maneuvering and Appeals
Senior Congress leaders received multiple appeals from prominent political figures urging them to step aside in the Baramati constituency. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Sunetra Pawar herself, NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule, and MLA Rohit Pawar all engaged in discussions with Congress leadership to persuade the party against fielding a candidate.
Even NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, who had previously stated that the Congress was within its rights to contest the bypoll, ultimately advised his alliance partner to withdraw. "Maharashtra lost a talented politician like Ajit Pawar," Sharad Pawar said. "The Baramati seat fell vacant due to a tragic accident and against this backdrop, my advice to the Congress would be to not contest the seat. It is a national party and we can at most appeal to them. Ultimately, it must decide."
Direct Appeals to Congress Leadership
Rohit Pawar personally met with Maharashtra Congress chief Harshwardhan Sapkal in Mumbai to request the withdrawal. Following this meeting, another delegation of NCP leaders, including MLA Sana Malik, approached Sapkal with the same objective.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also intervened directly, calling Sapkal on the phone to make his appeal. "I requested Sapkal to follow the tradition of Maharashtra and withdraw from Baramati the way BJP did after the death of former home minister R R Patil," Fadnavis explained, referencing previous political courtesies extended during similar circumstances.
Electoral Landscape and Timeline
With the Congress withdrawal, twenty-two independent candidates remain in the contest, but none present a significant challenge to Sunetra Pawar, the widow of Ajit Pawar. The bypoll was necessitated by Ajit Pawar's tragic death in an airplane crash on January 28, 2024. He had represented the Baramati constituency continuously since 1991.
The polling for the Baramati bye-election is scheduled to take place on April 23, with vote counting set for May 4. The withdrawal of the Congress candidate effectively clears the path for Sunetra Pawar's election, though the formal electoral process will proceed as scheduled.
Political Implications
This development highlights several important aspects of Maharashtra politics:
- The continued influence of the Pawar family in Baramati and surrounding regions
- The complex alliance dynamics between Congress and NCP factions
- The tradition of political parties showing deference in by-elections following tragic circumstances
- The strategic calculations of major political players in Maharashtra
The decision represents a significant political concession by the Congress party and demonstrates the delicate balance of power and relationships within Maharashtra's political landscape.
