Couple Survives Suicide Attempt in Tungabhadra River After Parents Oppose Interfaith Marriage
In a distressing incident in Davanagere district, a young couple attempted suicide by jumping into the Tungabhadra River near the Tungabhadra Bridge in Honnali town. The drastic step was taken after their parents vehemently opposed their marriage due to their different religious faiths.
Low Water Levels Prove Lifesaving
Fortunately, the water level in the river was notably low at the time, which likely prevented a fatal outcome. The individuals, identified as Sinchana and Sameer, both residents of the Anjaneya Cotton Mill area near Bada Cross in Davanagere city, survived the plunge. The couple, deeply in love, had made the decision to marry but faced stiff resistance from their families because of their differing faiths.
Rescue Operation by Authorities
Upon receiving information about the incident, police and fire department personnel swiftly rushed to the spot. They managed to rescue the couple and bring them safely back to the shore. Before the suicide attempt, Sinchana and Sameer had left their homes and traveled to various locations, including Mysuru and Shivamogga, before arriving in Honnali.
Dramatic Events Unfold on the River
From the Tungabhadra Bridge, the couple jumped into the river. After the jump, they swam to a small island situated in the middle of the river. It was there that they attracted attention, leading to the arrival of fire department personnel who conducted the rescue operation. This sequence of events highlights the couple's desperate state of mind and the immediate response by emergency services.
The incident underscores the severe emotional and psychological pressures that can arise from familial opposition to interfaith relationships. It also brings to light the critical role of timely intervention by authorities in preventing potential tragedies. The community and local officials are now likely to reflect on ways to address such sensitive issues more effectively to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
