Sumod of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Left Democratic Front has secured the Tarur Scheduled Caste reserved seat in Kerala's Palakkad district, garnering 11,910 votes and defeating Indian National Congress candidate Subramanian K.C. The Tarur Assembly constituency, designated as a Scheduled Caste reserved seat, is the 57th among the state's 140 legislative seats and forms an integral part of the Alathur Lok Sabha (SC) region.
Constituency Profile
This SC seat draws over 170,000 voters from predominantly rural areas with significant Dalit populations, registering turnouts around 78 percent. It encompasses grama panchayats such as Kannambra, Kavasseri, Kottayi, and others in north Kerala's agrarian lowlands. The seat reinforces the CPI(M)'s commanding LDF presence, prioritizing SC welfare against UDF and BJP inroads in this post-delimitation stronghold.
Historical Election Results
In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, CPI(M)'s P.P. Sumod dominated with 67,744 votes at 51.58 percent, decisively beating INC's K.A. Sheeba's 43,213 votes (32.90 percent) by 24,531 votes amid a 78.13 percent turnout. The 2016 result featured CPI(M)'s A.K. Balan securing around 67,000 votes (roughly 52 percent), triumphing over rivals by over 23,000 votes from nearly 165,000 voters, extending LDF's unbroken hold since the seat's 2011 creation.
Outlook for 2026
Heading into 2026, Tarur's CPI(M) supremacy, rooted in land reforms and reservation benefits, faces UDF minority appeals and BJP's consolidation efforts. Rural development and SC upliftment issues will dominate, positioning this LDF bastion as a key influencer in Alathur's electoral matrix.
