CPM Intensifies Statewide Campaign Against Central Government in Himachal Pradesh

In a significant political mobilization, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has launched a vigorous statewide protest campaign targeting the policies of the Central Government. The movement, dubbed 'Jatha Abhiyan', aims to galvanize public opposition to what the party labels as an anti-people agenda.

Public Meeting in Patlikul Draws Crowds

A key event in this campaign unfolded in Patlikul, located in the Manali subdivision of Kullu district, where former MLA Rakesh Singha spearheaded a public gathering on Saturday. The meeting saw participation from prominent CPM leaders such as Prem Gautam, Chandra Kanta, and members of the local district committee, who collectively addressed the assembled crowd.

Rakesh Singha delivered a scathing critique of the Central Government's decision to scrap the Revenue Deficit Grant (RDG) to Himachal Pradesh. He emphasized that as a hill state with unique geographical challenges, Himachal's economy is inherently fragile. The withdrawal of this crucial financial support, he argued, poses a severe threat to the state's financial stability and could derail its developmental progress.

Threats to Agriculture and Trade Agreements

Singha also raised alarms about international trade agreements being negotiated with countries like the United States, New Zealand, and the European Union. He warned that these pacts represent a direct threat to local farmers and orchardists.

"The apple economy of Himachal Pradesh, valued at thousands of crores, faces an unprecedented crisis if foreign fruits are allowed to flood the market," Singha cautioned. He highlighted the potential ruin for local growers, underscoring the economic vulnerabilities in the agricultural sector.

Criticism of Labour Codes and Privatization

The CPM leaders extended their criticism to the government's labour reforms, alleging that the replacement of 44 existing labour laws with new codes constitutes a blatant attack on workers' rights. They voiced strong opposition to the privatization initiatives in the power sector, particularly through the proposed Electricity (Amendment) Bill.

Additionally, the leaders condemned the repeated hikes in cooking gas prices, which they claim impose an undue burden on common citizens, exacerbating the cost of living crisis.

Demands for Land Rights and Compensation

Beyond protests, the CPM put forth specific demands to address social and economic disparities. They urged the government to provide land rights, calling for the allocation of two biswas in urban areas and three biswas in villages to landless families for house construction.

The party also demanded adequate compensation for individuals affected by natural disasters and development projects, advocating for stronger support mechanisms for vulnerable communities.

Call to Action and Future Protests

The public meeting concluded with a rallying cry for continued resistance. The leaders announced plans for a major protest demonstration in New Delhi on March 24, where thousands of party workers from Himachal Pradesh are expected to participate. This event aims to amplify their voices against the Central Government's policies on a national stage.

This statewide campaign reflects the CPM's strategic effort to mobilize grassroots support and challenge policy decisions that they believe undermine the interests of the people in Himachal Pradesh and beyond.
