OTTAPALAM: The verdict is in from Ottapalam in Kerala, where CPM candidate Adv. K. Premkumar has emerged victorious, retaining the seat he previously held. He defeated Independent candidate P.K. Sasi, son of Padmini Amma, by a margin of 26,777 votes. Premkumar secured 75,362 votes, while Sasi polled 48,585 votes in this closely watched contest.
Constituency Profile
Nestled in Kerala's Palakkad district, the Ottapalam Assembly constituency is surrounded by lush agrarian landscapes. It holds the 52nd position among the state's 140 legislative seats and is part of the Palakkad Lok Sabha region. This general seat energises over 210,000 voters from a predominantly Hindu rural base, with significant Ezhava and Nair influences. Voter turnout typically ranges between 75 and 77 per cent. The constituency spans Ottapalam town along with several grama panchayats in north Kerala's fertile plains. It exemplifies the Left Democratic Front's entrenched strength through the CPI(M), resisting the United Democratic Front's urban-rural outreach in this culturally rich, film-famous enclave.
Historical Voting Patterns
In the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections, CPI(M)'s Adv. K. Premkumar had secured 74,859 votes, accounting for 46.45 per cent of the vote share. He defeated INC's Dr. P. Sarin, who received 59,707 votes (37.05 per cent), by a solid margin of 15,152 votes amid a 75.76 per cent turnout. The 2016 victory went to CPI(M)'s P. Unni, who garnered 67,161 votes (44.71 per cent), overcoming INC's Adv. Shanimol Usman by 16,088 votes from nearly 190,000 voters. These results reinforce the LDF's sequential dominance in the constituency.
Outlook for 2026
Looking ahead to 2026, Ottapalam's LDF electoral streak, which has persisted since the 1990s with occasional UDF interruptions, continues to thrive on farm subsidies, irrigation projects, and cultural patronage. With the BJP making inroads among Hindu voters alongside INC pushes, this LDF bastion's agricultural heartbeat will pulse through Palakkad's electoral fortunes. The constituency remains a key battleground in Kerala's political landscape.
