A tragic accident on the Mumbai-Agra highway in Nashik district claimed the lives of a 62-year-old man and his 11-year-old grandson on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred on the Rahud Ghat stretch near Chandwad when a crane-mounted truck lost control and rammed multiple vehicles, according to police.
Victims identified
The deceased were identified as Abdul Kayyub Abdul Razaq (62) and Abdul Rehman (11), residents of Mohanbabanagar in Malegaon. They were traveling in a pickup truck from Chandwad to Malegaon when the crash took place around 4 pm.
How the accident happened
Inspector Kailas Wagh of the Chandwad police station stated that the driver of the crane-mounted truck lost control while descending the ghat section. The crane truck first struck a pickup, and then two other vehicles moving parallel on the road were also hit. The impact was severe, throwing the elderly man and the boy from their vehicle. Both succumbed to their injuries on the spot.
A 25-year-old goods autorickshaw driver, Yogesh Baviskar, also from Malegaon, sustained minor injuries in the collision.
Response and legal action
Police and highway authorities rushed to the scene after being alerted by the Chandwad toll plaza personnel. They cleared the congestion on the busy highway. Inspector Wagh confirmed that the crane truck driver has been arrested and booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving and causing death due to negligence. Traffic movement was briefly disrupted but was restored soon after.
