Dehradun Road Safety Under Intense Scrutiny Following Second Fatal Gorge Accident
Residents and activists in Dehradun have launched sharp criticism against what they describe as the 'lax attitude' of local authorities towards road safety. This outcry follows a recent tragic accident near Shikhar Falls on the city's outskirts, where an SUV plunged into a gorge, resulting in the death of a youth.
A Pattern of Negligence Emerges
This incident marks the second such fatal accident on a stretch where four-wheelers are explicitly not permitted. In a disturbingly similar case in May 2024, two youths lost their lives at the exact same location after their vehicle also fell into the gorge. The recurrence has ignited public fury and demands for immediate accountability.
'Two accidents in as many years at the same stretch should have raised alarm bells for the authorities. How many more lives need to be lost before they notice?' questioned resident Reenu Paul. She emphasized that the route is fundamentally a pedestrian path and a heritage trail. Its recent concretisation, she argues, has inadvertently encouraged increased and unsafe vehicle access, directly contradicting its intended use.
Systemic Failures in Traffic Management
Local community members allege that the absence of proper warning signage and consistent vigilance has allowed for the unrestricted movement of vehicles into hazardous areas, a primary factor contributing to these tragedies. They report that repeated warnings and petitions from the community have been consistently ignored by the responsible departments.
Social activist Anoop Nautiyal broadened the critique, pointing to systemic traffic management issues plaguing Dehradun as a whole. He cited a litany of problems:
- Poorly lit roads, especially in peripheral areas
- Rampant overspeeding and incidents of drunk driving
- Non-functional traffic signals at key intersections
- Fundamentally flawed road design that compromises safety
'Strict vigilance and adherence to regulations are the need of the hour,' Nautiyal asserted, calling for a comprehensive overhaul rather than piecemeal solutions.
Official Response and Promised Measures
In response to the mounting pressure, authorities have maintained that steps are actively being taken to enhance road safety across the city. SP (Traffic) Lokjeet Singh stated that identifying and mitigating accident-prone zones, or 'black spots', remains a routine and ongoing exercise.
'We have reduced the number of black spots in the city from 47 to 11, and work is underway to bring this number down further through initiatives like road widening, installation of functional traffic signals, and appropriate speed signage,' Singh explained. Officials added that specific to the Shikhar Falls area, warning signage may soon be installed to deter vehicles from entering the narrow, dangerous paths and to prevent future accidents.
However, for grieving residents and vigilant activists, these assurances ring hollow without visible, immediate, and effective action on the ground. The community awaits concrete measures to transform Dehradun's roads from zones of risk into corridors of safety.
