Delhi BJP Chief Compares Workers to Year-Round Students

New Delhi: Delhi BJP president Harsh Malhotra, a day after assuming charge of the state party unit, drew a parallel between party workers and diligent students who study throughout the year, not merely during examination periods. This, he asserted, is the reason behind the party's consistent performance in elections.

Preparedness for MCD Polls

When questioned about the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, likely his most significant upcoming challenge as state party president, Malhotra expressed unwavering readiness. “We are always ready for elections because our party cadre works throughout the year,” he stated. The MCD elections are scheduled for next year.

Organisational Restructuring

Malhotra announced that the party’s new state team would be finalised within the next two months. Vacant posts in district-level units will be addressed on a priority basis. New district teams are expected to be formed within the next 15 to 20 days, while the reorganisation of the state unit and appointment of office-bearers will be completed in two months. He indicated that preference would be given to active workers.

The BJP had lost control of the MCD in the last full civic elections in December 2022, when the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) unseated it. However, over the past couple of years, several councillors have defected, and the BJP currently holds the mayor's position in the MCD.

Coordination with Delhi Government

Asked about coordinating with the Delhi government, especially given that most of his predecessors led the state unit when the party was in opposition, Malhotra described the coordination as smooth so far. “It has been over a year and the state unit has been working in coordination with the government,” he said.

“When the government completed one year, party functionaries took the work done to the public. Whenever needed, party MLAs and MPs participated in organisational programmes,” he added.

Upcoming Campaign Plans

Malhotra stated that his first major responsibility as Delhi BJP chief would be to take the achievements of the Narendra Modi government and the work done by the Delhi BJP government to the people between June 5 and June 21. A review meeting with MLAs, MPs, and councillors regarding preparations was held on Thursday.

The campaign will include small and large public meetings across Delhi, programmes by MPs in Assembly segments falling under their Lok Sabha constituencies, and exhibitions in all revenue districts.

Infrastructure Projects

Malhotra, who also serves as the Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways, spoke about ongoing road infrastructure projects in Delhi-NCR. He said the Rekha Gupta government was working with the Centre to make Delhi congestion-free. Elevated roads from Sarai Kale Khan to Sohna and from Faridabad to Jewar would benefit commuters, he added. A Rs 650-crore elevated road project through Kalindi Kunj would make travel between Delhi, Faridabad, and Noida signal-free.

Balancing Multiple Responsibilities

When asked about balancing his multiple roles, Malhotra remarked that the BJP works as a team both in the ministry and the organisation. “The child who can handle every task is always given more work,” he said, adding that he would fully discharge his responsibilities.
