Dilip Ghosh's Political Homecoming in Kharagpur

As travelers approach Kharagpur city from National Highway 16, navigating through key junctions like Kausalya, Bodga, or Fire Brigade More, they encounter numerous political cutouts bearing a clear message: 'Kharagpur-e abar Dilipda' (Dilip returns to Kharagpur). For BJP stalwart Dilip Ghosh, this electoral contest represents a critical battle, marking his political resurgence in the constituency where he launched his career a decade ago.

A Veteran's Unbroken Connection

"I have never truly left Kharagpur. I have maintained my presence here consistently over the past eight years. The people of Kharagpur are familiar with my identity and my proven track record," declares Ghosh, the former BJP state president who orchestrated the party's initial significant electoral breakthrough in West Bengal during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Unlike other regions of West Midnapore where BJP campaign vehicles broadcast party jingles and speeches by central ministers at regular intervals, the local three-wheelers (totos) in Kharagpur predominantly feature recordings of candidate Dilip Ghosh's addresses, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's speeches being the sole exception. "I function as a dedicated political worker, operating strictly according to party directives," Ghosh stated while preparing to board a helicopter for a campaign event in Jhargram.

From Political Debut to Current Challenge

Ghosh attributes his political formation to Kharagpur. In 2016, he contested in an assembly constituency that had re-elected Congress MLA Gyan Singh Sohanpal for seven consecutive terms. Against expectations, Ghosh emerged victorious. His subsequent triumph in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from Midnapore not only positioned him as a BJP leader but also established a notable precedent. However, this parliamentary win necessitated vacating his MLA seat.

The ensuing byelection saw Trinamool Congress candidate Pradip Sarkar secure the seat. Although Sarkar faced defeat in the 2021 assembly elections, with BJP's actor-politician Hiran winning by a narrow margin of 3,771 votes, Hiran later became entangled in personal controversies. Amid headlines about Ghosh's marriage, allegations surfaced regarding Hiran's purported "second marriage," prompting his relocation to Shyampukur constituency.

This development has created an opportunity for Dilip Ghosh's second electoral attempt in Kharagpur, despite the lingering impact of his 2024 Lok Sabha defeat in Durgapur. Ghosh, who often describes himself as an "accidental politician," asserts that this election will not merely oust Trinamool from power but potentially consign it to political obscurity.

Controversial Rhetoric and Political Counterarguments

Renowned for his provocative statements, Ghosh recently drew criticism for threatening to employ bulldozers—reminiscent of tactics used in Uttar Pradesh—to remove encroachers if BJP wins the assembly polls. Ghosh defends his position vigorously: "From Railway properties to government-held khas land, from forested zones to roadside strips—encroachments have proliferated across Bengal. Additionally, there are localities where infiltrators have forcibly constructed residential structures," he alleges.

Trinamool's Pradip Sarkar, a seasoned contender in this political arena, demonstrates intimate familiarity with the constituency's demographic details and ward-level statistics. He positions himself as the authentic "ghorer chhele" (son of the soil). "Consider this: if Ghosh enjoyed such overwhelming popularity here, why did he avoid contesting the Lok Sabha elections from this constituency? If Hiran was genuinely successful, what prompted his abrupt departure? Why is Hiran entirely absent from the current campaign? The reality is that Ghosh has faltered both as an MLA and as an MP," Sarkar contends.

Voter Disillusionment and Local Issues

However, many voters express weariness with the persistent friction between the state government and the central administration, with neither side taking decisive action to complete stalled development projects or address pressing concerns like escalating pollution levels and the worsening water crisis.

"For a town adjacent to the prestigious IIT Kharagpur, the persistently high unemployment statistics present a particularly ironic situation. We have industrial facilities generating pollution but offering limited employment opportunities," remarks Ashok Vohra, a resident of Talbagicha.

Compounding these challenges, the deletion of 44,000 names from the Summary Revision of the Electoral Roll (SIR) has delivered a significant blow to all political contenders. In a constituency where electoral margins typically remain under 5,000 votes, this substantial reduction in the voter list could have profound repercussions on the election outcome.
