Disorder and Delays Plague Nagpur Municipal Corporation's First General Body Meeting
The inaugural general body meeting of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) was overshadowed by significant indiscipline among corporators, with both newly elected and experienced members arriving late and engaging in heated exchanges within the House. Scheduled to commence at 11am, the meeting experienced a delayed start as leaders from the ruling side reached the venue considerably later than the appointed time.
Casual Attitudes and Sharp Disagreements Dominate Proceedings
During the discussions, members from both the ruling party and the opposition displayed a notably casual attitude, undermining the formal proceedings. Sharp disagreements erupted even among ruling party corporators on multiple critical issues. These included concerns over the functioning of the Orange City Water Limited (OCWL), alleged irregularities within the transport department, persistent garbage problems at the Bhandewadi dumping yard, and the poor maintenance of green gyms across the city.
Mayor Neeta Thakre expressed deep concern over the prevailing situation and announced that specific instructions would be issued to all members to ensure discipline and punctuality in future meetings. "This lack of decorum cannot continue. We will be taking strict measures to uphold the dignity of the House," she stated emphatically.
Committee Formations and Key Appointments
Amid the disorder, several administrative decisions were made. Ruling party leader Balya Borkar formally submitted a letter to Mayor Thakre, nominating Rupali Thakur as a new member of the Fire Special Committee. This position had become vacant following the resignation of corporator and former mayor Mayatai Ivnate, who stepped down after her election to the Rajya Sabha.
The House also approved the formation of a committee tasked with naming city squares and roads. Deputy Mayor Leela Hathibed has been appointed as the chairperson of this panel. The committee includes BJP members Dilip Dive, Vinod Kanhere, Ramdas Sahu, and Chandrakant Khangar, alongside Congress members Deepak Patel and Asif Sadiq Sheikh. In a related proposal, NCP corporator Abha Pande demanded the installation of a statue of the late deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar at GPO Square and suggested naming the road in front of the deputy CM's house as 'Ajit Path'.
Additional Committee for Civic Maintenance
Further addressing civic concerns, the general body constituted another committee to monitor the maintenance of playgrounds and gardens throughout Nagpur. This panel will be headed by Additional Municipal Commissioner Vasumuna Pant and will include senior officials from the civic administration and engineering departments, aiming to enhance the upkeep of public recreational spaces.
Indiscipline Not Limited to Newcomers
In the 151-member House, a substantial 92 corporators are first-time entrants. However, the breach of decorum was not confined to these newcomers. Several seasoned corporators were also observed arriving late, participating in heated arguments, and disregarding the fundamental norms of the House, highlighting a broader issue of discipline within the municipal body.
The meeting underscored ongoing challenges in maintaining procedural decorum within the NMC, with Mayor Thakre's warning signaling a potential shift towards stricter enforcement of parliamentary conduct in upcoming sessions.
