The Pongala festival, held on March 3, saw Mayor V V Rajesh promptly claiming that the city had been completely cleaned the same night. However, Collector Anu Kumari's detailed report presents a different reality. Based on her personal inspection of the festival area before preparing the document for the state government, the report identifies multiple locations where waste remained uncleaned in the temple surroundings and broader festival zone.
The report further notes that temple authorities themselves informed officials that cleaning the temple premises would require two days, directly undermining the corporation's immediate cleanup narrative. This discrepancy has ignited significant controversy regarding the efficiency and transparency of municipal sanitation efforts.
Public Concerns and Political Interventions
Residents had previously raised alarms about heaps of waste accumulating in various parts of the city after the festival, citing potential public health risks. In response, the LDF parliamentary party within the corporation filed a formal complaint with the state government, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, urging immediate intervention to address the sanitation crisis.
Following these complaints, General Education Minister V Sivankutty directed the district administration to investigate possible lapses in the sanitation work.
