Congress Unity on Display as DK Shivakumar Hosts Dinner for Karnataka Legislators
In a significant political move, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar is set to host a dinner for nearly all Congress legislators in Bengaluru on Tuesday. This gathering is strategically timed during the ongoing budget session of the Karnataka legislature and aims to project a united front amid internal party wrangling.
Celebrating a Milestone and Fostering Cohesion
The dinner marks Shivakumar's completion of six years as the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC). Invitations have been personally extended by Shivakumar to all ministers, party MLAs, and MLCs, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. A legislator emphasized the importance of the event, stating, "There is no factionalism, and all legislators are expected to attend since the KPCC president has personally invited us."
In Delhi, Shivakumar clarified that the dinner is intended to bring party legislators together, with plans for similar meetings in the future. He announced, "A date will be fixed for a dinner for candidates who lost in the 2023 and 2024 state and Lok Sabha elections, as well as district presidents of the party." This initiative underscores efforts to strengthen internal bonds and address concerns within the party ranks.
Amidst Leadership Tussles and Speculation
The dinner comes against the backdrop of Shivakumar's ongoing tussle for the chief minister's post. He has made several trips to Delhi, ostensibly to pressure the party high command to honor an alleged pact that would see him take over as CM midway through the government's tenure. His latest visit to the national capital has sparked speculation about possible discussions with senior Congress leaders.
Shivakumar, however, remained tight-lipped about the details, remarking, "If I do not meet them, you will say the high command refused to meet me. So, I won't disclose anything." Sources reveal that he traveled to Delhi with party national president Mallikarjun Kharge from Kalaburagi on Sunday evening, following their joint appearance at an event in Chittapur to launch projects worth Rs 1,069 crore.
Strategic Timing and Broader Implications
At Karnataka Bhavan in Delhi, Shivakumar confirmed his plans to meet senior party brass during his visit, though he attributed the trip to a personal engagement in Pune. "There was a wedding at my friend's house in Pune. That is why I came to Delhi yesterday," he explained. Despite this, the timing of the dinner and his Delhi visits highlight the political maneuvering within the Congress party in Karnataka.
The dinner serves multiple purposes: it celebrates Shivakumar's tenure as KPCC president, reinforces party unity during a critical legislative session, and subtly addresses the leadership dynamics. As Congress navigates internal challenges, this event is poised to be a key moment in shaping the party's cohesion and strategy moving forward.
