DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth launched a sharp critique against the Tamil Nadu government on Monday, accusing it of failing to deliver on its promises to residents living near the Perundurai Sipcot industrial area in Erode district.
Broken Promises and Public Deception
During a visit to meet affected locals, Premalatha highlighted the severe environmental and civic issues plaguing the area. She stated that the state government's announcement in 2023 to establish a common effluent treatment plant (CETP) for Sipcot remains only on paper, with no tangible progress towards implementation.
She condemned this delay as an "eye-rolling attempt to deceive people" and pressed the administration to complete the crucial project at the earliest. The leader emphasized that the untreated sewage discharge from factories continues to contaminate the environment, posing a significant health hazard.
A Crisis of Air, Water, and Land
Premalatha detailed the grim reality faced by the community. She pointed out that air, water, and land in the vicinity are all polluted due to the unchecked industrial waste. Furthermore, she underscored that basic civic amenities remain elusive for the people living there, compounding their difficulties.
The DMDK general secretary urged the state authorities to find an immediate solution to this protracted crisis, stressing the urgent need to safeguard public health and the local ecosystem.
Holding Successive Governments Accountable
Premalatha did not limit her criticism to the current ruling party. She asserted that both past and present state governments share responsibility for the ongoing Sipcot issue. According to her, these parties have acted selfishly, neglecting the common good and welfare of the people for their own interests.
"The parties that ruled the state and the party that rules now are responsible for the Sipcot issue. They are all selfish and not thinking about the common good of the people," she said, holding the entire political establishment accountable for the environmental neglect.
