DMK Alliance Partners Queue Up to Finalize Seat Allocations for Tamil Nadu Polls
In a significant development ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly elections, parties within the DMK alliance have gathered at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai to hold crucial discussions with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The primary objective of these meetings is to finalize the list of constituencies each alliance partner wishes to contest, marking a critical step in the electoral preparation process.
Congress Leads the Charge with Substantial Seat Demands
The Indian National Congress, represented by AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu Girish Chodankar and TNCC president K Selvaperunthagai, took the lead in the negotiations. The party submitted a comprehensive list of 40 constituencies it deems favorable and has formally requested the DMK to allocate 28 seats from this selection. This move underscores Congress's strategic ambitions within the alliance framework.
Other Alliance Partners Outline Their Preferences
DMDK's Proposal: The Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), led by treasurer L K Sudhish, presented a list of 25 constituencies. From this, they have asked the DMK to select 10 seats for their candidacy. Sudhish indicated that approximately 70% of the constituencies have been finalized, with the remaining discussions scheduled to conclude on Thursday.
CPI's Submission: The Communist Party of India (CPI), represented by state secretary M Veerapandian, submitted a more focused list of eight constituencies. They have requested the DMK to allocate five seats from this list, highlighting their targeted approach to the electoral battle.
MMK's Request: The Manidhaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), which has been preliminarily allocated two seats by the DMK, submitted a list of four constituencies. The party has insisted that the DMK allocate two constituencies from the four they have proposed, emphasizing their specific regional interests.
DMK's Allocations to Smaller Parties
In a parallel development, the DMK has already allocated one seat each to three smaller parties within the alliance: the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi, and Mukkulathor Pulipadai. Notably, all three parties will contest the elections using DMK's iconic Rising Sun symbol, a move that strengthens the cohesive identity of the alliance.
Timeline for Finalization and Release
According to sources within the DMK, the discussions are set to continue on Thursday, with the final list of constituencies likely to be finalized by evening. Following this, the official list is expected to be released on Friday, providing clarity on the electoral landscape as the campaign season intensifies.
This collaborative effort among alliance partners reflects the strategic coordination essential for a united front in the highly competitive Tamil Nadu political arena. The outcome of these seat allocations will significantly influence the alliance's performance in the upcoming assembly elections.
