DMK-Congress Alliance Faces Internal Strife in Aranthangi Constituency
The political alliance between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Congress party in the Aranthangi constituency of Pudukottai district is experiencing significant strain, with visible cracks emerging over the allocation of the seat to the Congress. The discontent has escalated, marked by public criticism from former DMK MLA Udayam Shanmugam and the local DMK unit, who express frustration with the ongoing arrangement.
Historical Context and Current Tensions
Shanmugam highlighted that the Aranthangi constituency has been consistently allotted to the Congress in successive elections, despite the DMK maintaining a robust and influential presence in the area. This longstanding practice has fueled resentment among DMK cadres, who feel their contributions are being sidelined. The situation intensified recently when S T Ramachandran, the son of Su Thirunavukkarasar and the sitting Congress MLA, was fielded once again from the constituency, filing his nomination amidst growing dissent.
During an alliance meeting held on Monday evening in Aranthangi, attended by Minister S Regupathy and various party functionaries, Shanmugam voiced his dissatisfaction openly. He alleged that the incumbent Congress MLA has repeatedly failed to deliver on promises and development initiatives, despite receiving unwavering electoral support from DMK workers in past elections. "Our grassroots workers ensure the victory of the Congress candidate, but the MLA does nothing for them or for the constituency," Shanmugam stated, emphasizing the perceived neglect of DMK efforts.
Broader Implications for the Alliance
The friction between the former and current MLAs has been simmering for some time, with much of the conflict playing out publicly. Shanmugam lamented the personal and political costs of the arrangement, remarking, "Had I joined the AIADMK, I would have become a six-time MLA by now," underscoring his frustration with the DMK's decision to cede the seat. He further criticized the lack of reciprocity, noting that while DMK cadres work tirelessly to secure victories for Congress candidates, their efforts are often overlooked post-elections, with little acknowledgment or support in return.
The local DMK unit remains deeply disappointed, miffed over the seat not being allotted to their party even as the nomination process has been completed. This internal discord threatens to undermine the cohesion of the DMK-Congress alliance in the region, potentially affecting electoral outcomes and grassroots morale. The open criticism signals a broader challenge in managing alliance dynamics, where seat-sharing agreements can lead to internal strife if not handled with sensitivity to local sentiments and worker contributions.
As the political landscape evolves, the widening cracks in Aranthangi serve as a reminder of the complexities involved in coalition politics, where balancing party interests and worker expectations is crucial for maintaining unity and effectiveness in electoral campaigns.
