DMK Factionalism in Coimbatore: The Key to AIADMK's Electoral Dominance
In the political landscape of Coimbatore, particularly in the Pollachi constituency, the deep-seated factionalism within the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has emerged as a critical factor enabling the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) to maintain its winning streak. This internal discord has repeatedly sabotaged the DMK's electoral prospects, even in the face of significant opportunities to challenge the incumbent AIADMK.
The Pollachi Constituency: A Case Study in Missed Opportunities
During the previous election cycle, the DMK possessed a powerful weapon in the form of the sensational Pollachi sexual assault case, which implicated family members of the then-sitting AIADMK MLA, Pollachi V Jayaraman. Despite this, the party failed to capitalize on the scandal, largely due to its own internal divisions. More than five distinct factions operate within the DMK in Pollachi, and these groups have historically refused to collaborate. A common practice has developed: if one faction's functionary is nominated as the MLA candidate, the remaining factions actively work to ensure that candidate's defeat, thereby inadvertently securing victory for the AIADMK.
Recognizing the need to address this crippling factionalism to rewrite the constituency's political history, the DMK has taken a strategic step in the current election by allocating the Pollachi seat to its ally, the Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (KMDK). While this move is seen as a wise attempt to bypass internal conflicts, its success hinges on whether all five DMK factions will unite to support the KMDK candidate. If this alliance fails to yield the desired results, the seat is expected to once again go to the AIADMK, which has reposed its trust in Pollachi V Jayaraman as its candidate.
An AIADMK functionary highlighted the contrasting voter behavior, noting that party supporters in remote villages are unlikely to switch allegiance, whereas DMK votes are heavily influenced by factional loyalties. "If DMK fields a tough candidate, the constituency will see a tough fight," the functionary remarked, underscoring the potential for change if internal unity is achieved.
Local Discontent and Agricultural Influence
Meanwhile, residents and farmers in Pollachi express disappointment with both the DMK and AIADMK, as the Dravidian parties have long neglected their demand to bifurcate Pollachi from Coimbatore district and declare it a separate district. This issue could significantly impact voting decisions, especially among the agricultural community. Known as the coconut capital of Tamil Nadu, Pollachi's economy is deeply rooted in agriculture, with well-established industries in coconut pith, fiber, and coir products that are exported globally. Farmers, as a key voting bloc, have the potential to swing electoral outcomes in favor of any party that addresses their concerns.
Other Constituencies in Coimbatore: Valparai, Sulur, and Mettupalayam
The electoral dynamics extend beyond Pollachi to other constituencies in Coimbatore district. In the Valparai (reserved) assembly constituency, the AIADMK has enjoyed a winning streak, favored in the last two elections due to a large base of tea estate workers and their families. However, the party may face erosion in its vote bank this time due to a decline in voter numbers in hilly areas and an influx of guest workers in tea estates. Local issues, such as the lack of tourism infrastructure compared to Udhagamandalam and growing man-animal conflicts, could also influence voter decisions. The DMK typically allocates this seat to alliance partners, with its plans for the current election remaining uncertain.
In Sulur assembly constituency, another AIADMK stronghold, the area's emergence as an investment hub—particularly with the state government establishing a defence park—may provide the DMK with an opportunity to make inroads. Several new projects are enhancing Sulur's economic importance, though it remains to be seen whether this will dent the AIADMK's vote bank.
The Mettupalayam constituency also presents a potential challenge for the DMK if factionalism is not addressed. The AIADMK has fielded former MLA O K Chinnaraj to woo the Okkaliga Gowder community, which has a significant presence in Karamadai, Mettupalayam, and surrounding areas. "Since Chinnaraj belongs to the community, the party is eying to consolidate their votes by fielding him," a party source explained. In the previous election, the DMK gave the AIADMK a tough fight here. If the DMK can function as a single unit, it stands a chance to capture the seat; however, if factions continue to work against each other, its impact will likely be minimal.
Overall, the persistent factionalism within the DMK across Coimbatore's constituencies continues to be a decisive factor in AIADMK's electoral successes, highlighting the critical need for internal unity in opposition politics.
