DMK Finalizes Seat Sharing with CPI for Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections

In a significant development for Tamil Nadu politics, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has allocated five assembly seats to the Communist Party of India (CPI) for the upcoming state elections. The agreement was formalized on Wednesday after three rounds of negotiations, with CPI state secretary M. Veerapandian signing the pact alongside Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in Chennai.

CPI Prioritizes Democracy Over Seat Bargaining

Despite receiving one seat fewer than its allocation in the 2021 assembly elections, CPI leadership has downplayed the reduction, framing the alliance as a strategic move to uphold democratic values. "Our main objective in this election is to defeat the BJP, and we stand with Stalin in achieving this goal," stated Veerapandian. He emphasized that the party is "more concerned about continuing our fight for safeguarding democracy and the welfare of marginalized sections" than the number of contested seats.

DMK's Alliance Strategy Takes Shape

The CPI becomes the sixth political party to conclude seat-sharing talks with the DMK-led front, following agreements with:

  • Congress (28 seats)
  • MDMK (4 seats)
  • IUML (2 seats)
  • Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (2 seats)
  • Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi (2 seats)

With this allocation, the DMK has distributed 43 seats to its allies thus far. Initial negotiations saw the CPI requesting additional seats compared to 2021, but the DMK urged the party to "sacrifice a seat" to accommodate more coalition partners. After internal deliberations, the CPI's executive committee approved the revised allocation during a meeting at their Chennai headquarters on Tuesday.

Ongoing Negotiations with CPM

While the CPI has settled its seat share, negotiations with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) remain ongoing. The CPM is reportedly insisting on more seats than its 2021 allocation of six constituencies, of which it secured two victories. The DMK's careful balancing act in distributing seats among multiple allies highlights the complex dynamics of coalition politics in Tamil Nadu as parties unite against the BJP.

This seat-sharing agreement strengthens the DMK-led alliance's position ahead of the assembly polls, with all parties emphasizing a unified front to protect democratic institutions and address socio-economic disparities in the state.
