DMK Suffers Major Blow in Mettupalayam as Senior Leader Exits Party
In a significant political development that has sent shockwaves through the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) in Coimbatore district, former high-level executive committee member T R Shanmuga Sundaram has officially resigned from the party. The prominent businessman from Karamadai submitted his nomination papers as an independent candidate for the Mettupalayam assembly constituency on Saturday, marking a dramatic turn of events just ahead of the upcoming state elections.
Denied Ticket Sparks Resignation and Independent Bid
The resignation comes as a direct consequence of the DMK leadership's decision to deny Shanmuga Sundaram the party ticket for the Mettupalayam seat, despite his strong electoral history and extensive groundwork in the constituency. Instead, the party has selected Kavitha Kalyanasundaram, wife of Karamadai north union secretary S M T Kalyanasundaram, as their official candidate. This announcement triggered immediate protests from Shanmuga Sundaram's supporters, who gathered at his residence demanding a reversal of the decision.
Shanmuga Sundaram had narrowly lost the Mettupalayam seat in the previous assembly election by a margin of just 2,456 votes, creating expectations within his camp that he would receive a second chance to contest. He had been actively engaged in welfare activities and election preparations throughout the constituency in anticipation of the nomination.
Emotional Turmoil and Political Standoff
The situation escalated when a video circulated widely on social media showing an emotional Shanmuga Sundaram breaking down in front of his party cadres, highlighting the personal toll of the ticket denial. Despite a personal intervention attempt by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin during his visit to Coimbatore on Thursday, Shanmuga Sundaram remained steadfast in his decision to contest independently.
In his formal resignation letter addressed to the chief minister, Shanmuga Sundaram cited "personal reasons" for his departure from the DMK. Shortly after submitting the resignation, he arrived at the tahsildar's office accompanied by family members and supporters to officially file his nomination papers with the returning officer.
Historical Context and Electoral Implications
Mettupalayam has remained an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) stronghold since 2001, with incumbent AIADMK candidate O K Chinnaraj winning the seat consecutively in the 2006, 2011, and 2016 assembly elections. Political analysts now suggest that the DMK's decision to field a newcomer combined with Shanmuga Sundaram's independent candidacy could significantly split the party's traditional vote bank, potentially giving the AIADMK a distinct advantage in the upcoming contest.
Shanmuga Sundaram's political journey includes contesting the Mettupalayam constituency in the 2016 assembly election under the Tamil Maanila Congress banner as part of the Makkal Nala Kootani alliance before subsequently joining the DMK. His departure and independent candidacy represent not just a personal political decision but a strategic challenge to the DMK's electoral calculations in a crucial constituency.
