DMK Chief MK Stalin Launches 'Superstar' Election Manifesto with Focus on Women and Welfare

In a significant political move ahead of the April 23 assembly elections, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) president MK Stalin unveiled his party's manifesto on Sunday. The document, packed with a wide array of welfare promises, targets key sectors including women's empowerment, education, agriculture, health, and industry. Stalin confidently declared the manifesto as the "superstar" of the elections, embodying the next phase of the state's Dravidian model of governance.

He expressed strong optimism about the DMK's prospects, predicting a seventh term in power with over 200 of the 234 seats in the upcoming polls. The manifesto outlines a comprehensive 10-year vision aimed at sustaining welfare and equitable development, reinforcing Tamil Nadu's status as a national leader in governance.

Illatharasi Coupon Scheme: Empowering Women with Financial Support

At the core of the manifesto is the introduction of the "Illatharasi" coupon scheme, designed specifically for women. This initiative will provide a one-time coupon worth Rs 8,000 to women from households not under the income tax bracket. The coupon can be used to purchase or replace essential household electronic goods such as televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, mixies, microwave ovens, or induction stoves.

The term 'Illatharasi,' which translates to "queen of the house," highlights the role of women as heads of families. DMK spokesperson TKS Elangovan elaborated that the scheme aims to address public problems by offering immediate financial assistance for gadget replacements, thereby reducing school dropouts and promoting education among children.

Expansion of Existing Welfare Schemes

The DMK has committed to enhancing several ongoing welfare programs. Financial assistance under the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Scheme (KMUT) will be doubled from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, with plans to include new eligible beneficiaries. Stalin highlighted the scheme's success, noting that it has benefited approximately 1.3 crore families despite challenges from opposition parties.

Additionally, the chief minister's breakfast scheme will be extended to cover students up to Class 8, benefiting around 15 lakh students. Monthly education grants for girls under the Puthumai Penn and Tamil Pudhalvan schemes will increase from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500, further supporting female education.

Health, Agriculture, and Social Welfare Initiatives

In the healthcare sector, the manifesto promises to raise the income ceiling under the CM Health Insurance Scheme to Rs 5 lakh and increase the sum assured to Rs 10 lakh. Pensions for the elderly, widows, and unmarried women above 50 will be enhanced to Rs 2,000 per month, while persons with disabilities will receive Rs 2,500 monthly.

For farmers, the DMK pledges to provide modern electric pumpsets without meters under the free electricity scheme, expected to benefit over 20 lakh cultivators. The paddy procurement price will rise to Rs 3,500 per quintal, and sugarcane procurement will increase to Rs 4,500 per tonne. The party also commits to constructing 10 lakh new houses within five years to address housing needs.

A Decade-Long Vision for Tamil Nadu's Development

Unveiling the manifesto in Chennai, Stalin positioned Tamil Nadu as a pioneer in welfare implementation, asserting that no other Indian state has matched its success in such schemes. He emphasized the DMK's dedication to strengthening education, healthcare, and social security while preserving the state's reputation as a model welfare entity.

The manifesto reflects a strategic approach to governance, aiming to build on past achievements and drive sustained progress for all citizens. With these promises, the DMK seeks to secure public support and continue its legacy of transformative policies in Tamil Nadu.
