Two persons sustained serious injuries when a drug peddler, Ashraful Haque, attacked a mob protesting against his illegal drug business at Bheta Bazar on Friday. A police source confirmed that Haque has been detained and is currently being interrogated.
Police Response and Mob Action
Upon receiving information about the incident, police arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control. However, by then, a mob of nearly 500 residents had damaged a motorbike and ransacked Haque’s house.
Local Allegations
Locals of the Bheta Bazar area alleged that Haque had been running a drug syndicate from his residence for a long time, despite several warnings to stop the business. Speaking to TOI, a resident named Azizul Rahman said, “All day long, there is a queue of youths in front of his house to buy drugs. Haque even set up a counter in front of his house. Despite several complaints to the police, no action has been taken against the peddler.”
The Attack
Locals went to Haque’s residence on Friday to confront him and demand that he cease his business. However, Haque refused to comply and attacked them with a sharp weapon, injuring two individuals—Feroz Ali and Abed Ali. Both victims sustained serious injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Police have assured that a thorough investigation is underway and that Haque will face legal consequences. The incident has sparked outrage among residents, who are demanding stricter action against drug peddlers in the area.
