Enforcement Directorate Launches Major Raids Across Bengal in Ration Scam Investigation
In a significant development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) executed simultaneous search operations at twelve distinct locations throughout West Bengal on Friday. This extensive action is directly linked to the ongoing investigation into the alleged multi-crore ration distribution scam that has rocked the state.
Widespread Search Operations Target Business Premises
The federal agency's teams fanned out across multiple districts, conducting thorough searches at premises in Kolkata, Bongaon, Murshidabad, and Howrah. The primary focus of these raids was the residences and business establishments of several individuals, predominantly businessmen, who are suspected of being deeply involved in the illicit ration distribution racket.
Specific locations in Kolkata, including prominent areas on Lord Sinha Road and in Minto Park, were also subjected to intensive scrutiny by ED officials. Furthermore, in Howrah, the agency specifically targeted and searched the premises of a local rice dealer, indicating a direct link to the food grain supply chain under investigation.
Minister Skips Summons, Alleges Political Conspiracy
In a parallel and contentious development, West Bengal's Fire and Emergency Services Minister, Sujit Bose, chose not to appear before the Enforcement Directorate on Friday. He was summoned in connection with a separate but related municipal recruitment corruption probe.
Instead of complying, Minister Bose sent a formal letter to the central agency. In this communication, he leveled serious allegations of "harassment" and claimed the investigation is a component of a "vile conspiracy." Bose raised multiple objections against the ED's procedures and motives.
This accusation follows his previous statements where he asserted that the Enforcement Directorate is being weaponized for political targeting ahead of the crucial upcoming state assembly elections. He has maintained that the documents provided to him by the ED did not conclusively or explicitly mention his name in any incriminating context, questioning the basis of the summons.
The simultaneous raids and the minister's defiant response underscore the escalating tensions between central investigative agencies and the state government in West Bengal. The ED's actions signal a deepening probe into the alleged corruption within the public distribution system, while the political allegations highlight the charged atmosphere surrounding these investigations.
