Eid Celebrations Unfold in Guwahati Amid Assam Assembly Election Season
In the vibrant city of Guwahati, the festive spirit of Eid-ul-Fitr shone brightly even as the political heat of the Assam assembly elections intensified. Thousands of devoted worshippers gathered at mosques and idgahs across the city on Saturday, marking the end of the holy month of Ramzan with prayers and joyous celebrations.
Large Congregations and Traditional Festivities
From the early morning hours, prominent mosques in Guwahati witnessed massive congregations. Key locations such as Machkhowa and the Garigaon locality in Jalukbari saw significant gatherings of devotees who had fasted from dawn to dusk during Ramzan. After the prayers, familiar and heartwarming scenes unfolded across the city.
Warm embraces and the exchange of greetings like "Eid Mubarak" filled the air as crowds gradually dispersed into their neighbourhoods. The celebrations continued throughout the day, with families preparing elaborate meals and many visiting relatives and friends to share in the festive joy.
Political Undertones and Calls for Unity
With the assembly elections looming large, conversations and prayers subtly reflected the current political mood. Kunki Chowdhury, who is contesting her first election from the Guwahati Central assembly constituency on behalf of the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), shared her thoughts on this holy occasion.
"I am contesting for the very first time, and on this holy occasion, I have come to seek their blessings," she said, highlighting the intersection of faith and politics. Meanwhile, Rubul Ali, a resident of Gandhibasti, emphasized the need for calm and unity during this critical period.
"We are praying for peace and unity. With the elections approaching, we only hope that everything remains calm and people stand together without any division," Ali urged, echoing a sentiment shared by many in the community.
Tribute to a Cultural Icon Amid Celebrations
Despite the intense political fervour, communities in Guwahati also chose to honour a beloved cultural icon. Several mosques paused amid the election buzz to pay heartfelt tribute to the late singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away last year.
At the Samguri Bor Masjid Kosida Jamat in Sivasagar, the atmosphere turned commemorative as the mosque was illuminated with decorative lights. A cutout of Zubeen Garg was prominently displayed, becoming the focal point of the tribute as devotees remembered the legendary artist alongside their prayers.
This gesture highlighted how cultural figures continue to inspire and unite people, even during times of political significance. The dual themes of celebration and remembrance created a unique and poignant backdrop for this year's Eid festivities in Guwahati.
