Elderly Man on Scooter Dies in Accident, Family Blocks Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar Road in Protest
A tragic accident claimed the life of an elderly man on a scooter after he was struck by a private bus near the Chak Gujran petrol pump on the Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar road. The incident, which occurred on the morning of March 13, 2026, resulted in immediate death at the scene, sparking outrage and a prolonged protest by the victim's family.
Details of the Fatal Collision
The deceased has been identified as Resham Singh, aged 73, a resident of Kirti Nagar in Hoshiarpur. According to family members, including his son Balram Singh, Gurpreet Kumar, and Anchit Agarwal, Resham Singh had left his home around 8:30 am to perform daily service at the Radha Soami Satsang Ghar in Chak Gujran. As he reached the accident spot, a speeding bus belonging to Doaba Roadways Private Company, traveling from Hoshiarpur, allegedly hit his scooter from behind.
Witnesses reported that after the collision, the bus driver dragged the victim for a significant distance before the vehicle finally came to a stop after veering off the road onto the roadside area. This gruesome detail added to the family's distress and anger over the handling of the situation.
Family's Protest and Allegations of Negligence
In response to the accident, family members of the deceased blocked the Hoshiarpur-Jalandhar road, staging a protest that lasted nearly four hours. They expressed fury not only at the driver but also at the district administration for what they perceived as gross negligence.
The family alleged that after the accident, the bus driver and conductor were swiftly taken away by another driver from the same company in a different bus, potentially evading immediate accountability. They further claimed that the victim's body lay on the road for an extended period without any administrative official arranging for an ambulance to transport him to a hospital.
"After waiting for about two hours with no help from authorities, we had to place the body in our own vehicle and take it ourselves," a family member stated, highlighting the lack of timely assistance.
Police Response and Aftermath
SHO Parvinderjeet Pal Singh from the Bullowal Police Station arrived at the scene to manage the situation. Company inspector Sukhjeet Singh assured the police that the bus driver and conductor would present themselves before the authorities. The driver was identified as Tara Chand, a resident of village Fambian near Sham Churasi.
Following assurances from the police of strict action against the accused, the family ended their protest, and the road was reopened. During the blockade, traffic was severely disrupted, forcing many travelers to take alternative kucha roads or proceed on foot to reach their destinations.
The police have sent the body to the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur for a post-mortem examination and have initiated a search for the accused individuals involved in the accident. This incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety and administrative responsiveness in the region.
