Elderly man tied up, robbed of 45 sovereigns gold

Thrissur: In a shocking incident early Sunday, a three-member gang allegedly tied up an elderly man and robbed gold jewellery weighing nearly 45 sovereigns along with cash worth Rs 50,000 from his residence at Mannuthy Mullakkara, near Thrissur.

Details of the Robbery

According to preliminary information received by the police, the accused entered the house of Cherupara Veettil Somasekharan (72), a resident of Ollukkara, by breaking open the grill door at the rear side. They then tied his hands and legs and stuffed his mouth with cloth pieces to prevent him from raising an alarm.

Somasekharan was alone at home at the time of the incident. His wife and daughter had gone to a relative's house, and his son is employed abroad.

Victim's Escape and Alert

After the robbers left, Somasekharan managed to untie the knots and free his hands and legs. He immediately ran out of the house and alerted the neighbours and the police.

Investigation Underway

The police are investigating the case with the assistance of a dog squad and forensic experts. Since the house does not have CCTV cameras, the authorities have collected footage from cameras installed in neighbouring houses. The suspects are believed to be Hindi-speaking, and the police have not ruled out the possibility that the use of Hindi might be a deliberate attempt to mislead the investigation.

Further updates are awaited as the probe continues.
