Elderly Woman Injured in Knife Attack Outside Polling Centre

Madurai: The Madurai district police arrested a man after a 70-year-old woman was injured in a knife attack outside a polling centre at Thirumangalam on Thursday.

Police said Amirthavalli cast her vote at a polling booth in the Government Higher Secondary School, Melakottai, around 8 am. Subsequently, she was waiting nearly 100 metres from the polling station for her son. At that time, Balamurugan, 28, who was in an inebriated condition, was involved in a verbal spat with Marimuthu, 30, with whom he had previous enmity. During the tussle, Balamurugan threw a knife at Marimuthu, but it hit Amirthavalli's leg, resulting in a minor injury. She received treatment at a government hospital as an outpatient.

The Thirumangalam taluk police registered a case and arrested Balamurugan. The incident highlights the need for enhanced security measures at polling centres to ensure the safety of voters, especially the elderly. The police have assured that strict action will be taken against those who disrupt the electoral process.
