Election King K Padmarajan to Challenge Vijay in Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls

In a remarkable twist to the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly election, K Padmarajan, famously dubbed the 'Election King' for his unparalleled record of contesting and losing 252 elections since 1988, has announced his intention to file nominations as an independent candidate. The 67-year-old from Mettur in Salem district plans to stand in the constituency where actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Vijay is set to contest on April 23, adding a unique dimension to the political landscape.

A Legacy of Unprecedented Electoral Participation

Padmarajan's journey spans nearly four decades, during which he has contested a wide array of elections, including local body, cooperative society, assembly, Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, President of India, and Vice-President of India polls. Despite never securing a victory, he views participation itself as a triumph, an attitude that has earned him the moniker 'Election King' and a prestigious entry in the Limca Book of Records for the most unsuccessful candidate.

His electoral endeavors have come at a significant financial cost, with losses exceeding Rs 1 crore in election deposits. However, Padmarajan remains undeterred, citing his best performance in the 2011 Tamil Nadu assembly election, where he garnered 6,273 votes in the Mettur constituency. "I could not believe that I secured so many votes," he recalls, highlighting the unexpected support he received.

Contesting Against Political Heavyweights

Over the years, Padmarajan has faced off against some of India's most prominent leaders, demonstrating his commitment to the democratic process. His notable opponents include:

  • Late Chief Ministers M Karunanidhi and J Jayalalithaa
  • Former Prime Ministers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and P V Narasimha Rao
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections

In addition, he has contested six times for the President of India and seven times for the Vice-President of India, showcasing his relentless pursuit of electoral engagement.

Current Electoral Strategy and Awaiting Vijay's Announcement

For the upcoming Tamil Nadu assembly election, Padmarajan plans to file his papers in both the Mettur constituency and the yet-to-be-announced constituency where Vijay will contest. "I am waiting," he states, as the actor has not disclosed his chosen constituency. This move underscores Padmarajan's enduring passion for elections, regardless of the odds or opponents involved.

His story serves as a testament to the spirit of democracy, where participation can sometimes overshadow victory, inspiring many with his unwavering dedication to the electoral process in Tamil Nadu and beyond.
