In the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections, AIADMK general secretary and former chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) secured a decisive victory in the Edappadi constituency, winning with 95,769 votes. He defeated independent candidate K Premkumar, who was backed by actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), by a margin of 45,004 votes. Premkumar polled 50,765 votes, while DMK candidate C Kasi garnered 42,967 votes.
EPS's Dominance in Edappadi
This marks the sixth time EPS has won the Edappadi seat since 1981, with losses only in 1996 and 2006. His victory margin has remained formidable or expanded in each election. In 2021, he defeated DMK's T Sampath Kumar by 93,802 votes, and in 2016, he beat PMK's N Annadurai by 42,022 votes. The consistent performance underscores his entrenched hold over the constituency.
Factors Behind EPS's Success
AIADMK leaders attribute EPS's consistency to his personal rapport with voters and the party's strong booth-level presence. A senior district functionary noted that Edappadi is closely tied to EPS's political identity, with voters viewing him as one of their own. Another cadre highlighted his welfare measures and outreach to farmers, women, and small traders as key to preserving a durable support base.
A critical factor has been the fragmented opposition. In 2016, PMK was the main challenger; in 2021, it was DMK; and in 2026, a TVK-backed independent entered the fray. Despite changing rivals, EPS retained a consolidated vote base while opposition support remained divided.
Campaign Strategy
EPS's campaign strategy in Edappadi consistently combined local development messaging with emotional and political symbolism. He highlighted irrigation works, road projects, and regional development while invoking the AIADMK legacy of MGR and Jayalalithaa. This mix of constituency focus and party tradition resonated with voters.
For AIADMK, Edappadi remains central to its strength in western Tamil Nadu. For EPS, the constituency continues to anchor his political authority, with the 2026 result further cementing its status as his strongest bastion.
