Ernakulam Establishes Crisis Management Committee for LPG Sector Challenges
In response to ongoing disruptions in the cooking gas distribution sector, a crisis management committee has been officially formed in Ernakulam district. This proactive measure aims to address and mitigate the significant challenges faced by both domestic and industrial consumers in accessing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Leadership and Initial Meeting Details
The committee is chaired by District Collector G Priyanka, with District Supply Officer S R Smitha serving as the convener. The inaugural meeting was convened at the collector's chamber in Kakkanad on Saturday, specifically to review and assess the current issues plaguing the LPG sector. During this session, officials provided a comprehensive update on the distribution status and outlined immediate steps to streamline operations.
Current Supply Status and Restrictions
The committee reported that the distribution of LPG cylinders for domestic use is proceeding smoothly, ensuring households continue to receive essential fuel without major interruptions. However, a notable restriction has been imposed on the supply of cylinders for industrial purposes. This move is part of a strategic effort to manage limited resources and prioritize critical needs during the ongoing crisis.
Booking Procedures and Application Requirements
To facilitate orderly distribution, cylinder bookings will be exclusively permitted through the official website www.lpgtrackerkerala.in. Applicants are required to submit the following details to ensure processing:
- Consumer number
- Agency name
- Establishment name
- A brief description of the establishment
Applications that lack these essential details will be automatically rejected to maintain efficiency and accuracy in the allocation process.
Application Resolution and Priority Distribution
Out of 3,296 applications received at the district control room for cylinder supply, all except 1,884 applications—which were incomplete or lacked necessary details—have been successfully resolved. The committee has established a clear priority framework for the distribution of commercial cylinders, focusing on essential services and institutions. Priority is being given to:
- Hospitals
- Old age homes
- Orphanages
- Community kitchens
- Educational institutions
- Public sector establishments
- Public crematoriums
This prioritization ensures that the most vulnerable and critical sectors receive uninterrupted LPG supply during the crisis.
Future Initiatives: PNG System Implementation
In a forward-looking move, the meeting also informed that steps are underway to implement the Piped Natural Gas (PNG) system as a sustainable alternative to LPG. This initiative aims to reduce dependency on traditional cylinder-based distribution, potentially alleviating future supply challenges and enhancing energy security for the region.
The formation of this crisis management committee underscores Ernakulam's commitment to addressing immediate LPG sector issues while planning for long-term solutions. Continued monitoring and adaptive strategies are expected to improve distribution efficiency and support both domestic and industrial consumers in the coming months.
