Ernakulam District Sees Significant Rise in Voter Turnout for Assembly Elections

Ernakulam district witnessed a robust voter participation in Thursday's assembly elections, with the turnout reaching 79.37% by 7 PM. This figure represents a notable increase from the 74.12% recorded in 2021 and slightly exceeds the 79% turnout observed in 2016, highlighting growing civic engagement in the region.

Constituency-Wise Polling Performance

Among the constituencies, Kunnathunadu registered the highest polling percentage at 83.6%, demonstrating strong voter mobilization. In contrast, Angamaly reported the lowest turnout at 75.62%. North Paravur, where opposition leader V D Satheesan is contesting against CPI's E T Taison, saw a turnout of 81.96%. Tripunithura and Kalamassery also crossed the 80% mark, while the remaining constituencies remained below 80% until evening.

Steady Participation and Administrative Efforts

Polling booths across Ernakulam district experienced steady participation from early morning, with long queues observed at several locations. A total of 15,148 officials were deployed across 3,149 polling stations to manage the electoral process efficiently. All stations were equipped with webcasting facilities to ensure transparency and security, enhancing trust in the voting system.

Voter Stories: Commitment and Aspirations

For 77-year-old Subhadra Subhashanan, voting remains a lifelong commitment. Assisted by neighbors, she reached the polling station at St Joseph High School in Chullikkal and stated, "I have not missed an election yet. Today too, I came with their support and cast my vote."

First-time voter Synora Shiju, who is learning German and plans to pursue studies abroad, shared a different perspective. "As it was my first time, I was tense, but everything went smoothly. I am voting because I would like to see a change in the government," she said, emphasizing the role of youth in shaping political outcomes.

Enhanced Polling Arrangements for Voter Convenience

Polling arrangements were meticulously designed to prioritize voter comfort. At a homoeopathy dispensary converted into a booth in Panayappilly, facilities such as drinking water, seating, feeding rooms, and ORS were made available. Asna L, a booth level officer (BLO), explained, "We have ensured basic amenities for voters' comfort." Despite being on duty, Asna was unable to cast her vote until evening due to the continuous flow of voters, stating, "I have been waiting for the queue to ease since morning, but it has not happened so far."

Initiatives Promoting Inclusivity in the Electoral Process

Officials introduced several initiatives to foster inclusivity during the elections. As part of women's empowerment measures, one polling booth in each of the 14 constituencies was managed entirely by women, including polling and security personnel. Additionally, two special polling stations operated entirely by officials with disabilities were set up in Kochi and Muvattupuzha constituencies, underscoring efforts to make the electoral process more accessible and representative for all citizens.
