Ernakulam District Sees Robust Voter Participation in Assembly Elections
Ernakulam district recorded a substantial voter turnout of 79.37% by 7 PM during Thursday's assembly elections, demonstrating heightened civic engagement. This figure represents a notable increase from the 74.12% recorded in the 2021 elections and slightly exceeds the 79% turnout observed in 2016, reflecting growing public interest in the democratic process.
Constituency-Wise Polling Performance
Among the various constituencies, Kunnathunadu emerged with the highest polling percentage at 83.6%, showcasing exceptional voter mobilization. In contrast, Angamaly reported the lowest turnout at 75.62%, though still a respectable figure. North Paravur, a key battleground where opposition leader V D Satheesan is contesting against CPI candidate E T Taison, recorded a strong 81.96% participation.
Tripunithura and Kalamassery also crossed the significant 80% mark, indicating widespread voter enthusiasm. The remaining constituencies maintained steady participation but stayed below the 80% threshold until evening, with polling booths across the district witnessing consistent activity from early morning. Long queues were observed at multiple locations, underscoring the public's commitment to exercising their franchise.
Diverse Voter Demographics and Administrative Efforts
Voters from all segments of society, including elderly residents, women with infants, and persons with disabilities, turned out in large numbers, highlighting the inclusive nature of the electoral exercise. To manage this extensive process, a total of 15,148 officials were deployed across 3,149 polling stations throughout Ernakulam district.
All polling stations were equipped with webcasting facilities to ensure transparency and security, allowing real-time monitoring of the proceedings. This technological integration played a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of the electoral process and fostering public trust.
Personal Stories of Voter Dedication
For 77-year-old Subhadra Subhashanan, voting remains a lifelong commitment. With assistance from neighbors, she reached the polling station at St Joseph High School in Chullikkal and cast her vote. "I have not missed an election yet. Today too, I came with their support and cast my vote," she stated, embodying the spirit of democratic participation.
First-time voter Synora Shiju, who is learning German and plans to pursue studies abroad, shared a different perspective. "As it was my first time, I was tense, but everything went smoothly. I am voting because I would like to see a change in the government," she explained, reflecting the aspirations of younger voters seeking political transformation.
Enhanced Polling Arrangements and Inclusivity Initiatives
Polling arrangements were meticulously designed to prioritize voter convenience. At a homoeopathy dispensary converted into a booth in Panayappilly, facilities such as drinking water, seating areas, feeding rooms, and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) were made available to ensure comfort. "We have ensured basic amenities for voters' comfort," said Asna L, a booth level officer (BLO).
Despite being on duty, Asna was unable to cast her vote until evening due to the continuous flow of voters. "I have been waiting for the queue to ease since morning, but it has not happened so far," she noted, highlighting the sustained voter turnout throughout the day.
Officials introduced several initiatives to promote inclusivity and empowerment. As part of women's empowerment measures, one polling booth in each of the 14 constituencies was managed entirely by women, including both polling and security personnel. Additionally, two special polling stations operated entirely by officials with disabilities were set up in Kochi and Muvattupuzha constituencies, furthering efforts to make the electoral process more accessible and representative.
These comprehensive efforts contributed to a smooth and efficient voting experience, reinforcing Ernakulam's commitment to democratic values and participatory governance.
