Ousted CPI MLA C C Mukundan Defects to BJP, Shakes Up Kerala Political Landscape

In a dramatic political development that has sent shockwaves through Kerala's Left parties, former CPI MLA C C Mukundan has officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This move comes just days after he was ousted from the Communist Party of India (CPI) for publicly criticizing the party's decision to deny him a ticket for the upcoming assembly elections in the Nattika constituency.

From CPI Rebellion to BJP Membership

Mukundan's political journey took a sharp turn when the CPI decided to field former MLA Geetha Gopi as the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate in Nattika. The sitting MLA raised a banner of revolt within his party, alleging that Nattika had become a 'payment seat' and that Gopi was selected primarily because she could ensure more funds for the party.

"I was not able to bring funds to the party and that's why I was denied a ticket," Mukundan had declared publicly. "Let there be a vigilance enquiry into my wealth and her wealth covering the last 15 years."

After his expulsion from CPI, Mukundan initially sought support from the Congress and United Democratic Front (UDF) to contest the seat as their nominee. When Congress refused his request, he turned to the BJP, a party he had previously criticized for its alleged communal character.

Joining the 'Party Protecting Poorer Sections'

In a significant ideological shift, Mukundan accepted BJP membership from NDA vice-chairman in Kerala A N Radhakrishnan on Monday. He explained his decision by stating he was joining "a party which has been protecting the poorer sections of society."

Radhakrishnan welcomed Mukundan into the party fold, suggesting the former CPI leader could become "a trendsetter for the flow of leaders from other parties in the state to BJP."

Electoral Implications in Nattika

Mukundan will contest the Nattika assembly seat as the NDA candidate using BJP's lotus symbol in the upcoming elections. This development is particularly significant because Nattika has traditionally been an LDF stronghold.

However, BJP sees potential in the constituency. During the previous Parliamentary elections, BJP nominee Suresh Gopi earned a significant lead in this assembly segment. Meanwhile, Mukundan himself won the seat in the previous assembly election by a substantial margin of 28,431 votes - higher than the majority secured by Geetha Gopi in the 2016 elections.

The BJP strategy appears to combine the party's established vote bank with Mukundan's personal popularity in the constituency. Party leaders believe this combination could secure victory in Nattika, though notably, Mukundan's name was absent from BJP's first list of candidates released earlier.

Political Repercussions Across Kerala

This defection represents more than just one MLA changing parties. It marks a significant embarrassment for Left parties in Kerala, who have recently been mocking the Congress party for failing to prevent its leaders from joining the Sangh Parivar camp in various states.

The timing is particularly sensitive with assembly elections approaching, and the move could potentially influence other disaffected politicians across the political spectrum in Kerala. As political realignments continue ahead of the elections, Mukundan's journey from CPI rebel to BJP candidate illustrates the fluid nature of Kerala politics and the high stakes involved in constituency-level decisions.

All eyes will now be on Nattika to see whether Mukundan can translate his local popularity and BJP's organizational strength into an electoral victory that would mark a significant breakthrough for the party in Kerala.
