Former Multani Bakery Owner Dies by Suicide in Solapur
Sunil Motilal Sadarangani, aged 59 and the former proprietor of Solapur's renowned Multani Bakery, tragically died by suicide on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred when he jumped from the 17th floor of an apartment building located in the Vijapur Road area of the city.
Police Investigation and Family Statements
According to police reports, no suicide note was discovered at the scene. The family informed authorities that Sadarangani had been grappling with significant financial difficulties. Police confirmed that he had relocated to Pune after selling the bakery several years ago.
On Thursday around 2:30 PM, Sadarangani drove to the apartment building in Solapur. He parked his vehicle and used the stairs to access the top floor, deliberately avoiding the biometric check-in system. Initially, he was observed walking along the side portion of the terrace.
A security guard noticed him and escorted him down to the 10th floor in an attempt to persuade him to reconsider. However, Sadarangani asked the guard to leave, claiming he had forgotten his car keys and needed to return upstairs. By the time the guard reached the terrace again, Sadarangani had already jumped, resulting in his immediate death at the spot.
Police identified him using the registration number of his car. Solapur Commissioner of Police M Rajkumar stated, "He had shifted to Pune. The family told us that he was undergoing psychological issues and was in debt, which led him to take this step. We are yet to record statements from the family members as they are grieving. There is no foul play detected so far in the case, and no suicide note was found."
Family Background and Business Legacy
A close relative shared with TOI that Sadarangani belonged to the Sindhi community. His father, Motilal, founded the bakery, which later gained fame in the region. The family also operated a flour mill. After his father's passing, Sunil Sadarangani took over the business but eventually sold it due to mounting debt.
He is survived by two sons—one settled abroad and the other residing in Pune, where Sadarangani had moved four years ago. His last rites were performed on Friday evening in Solapur. As a third-generation resident of the city, a large crowd gathered at the crematorium to pay their respects, reflecting the deep community ties and the impact of his family's legacy in the area.
