Maharashtra's Deputy Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, stepped in on Wednesday to defuse a major political controversy in Latur. The tension erupted after a statement by the state's BJP president, Ravindra Chavan, which was interpreted as suggesting the legacy of the late former Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, would be erased from the city.
Political Backlash and Bandh Call
The remark triggered a sharp backlash from the Congress and other political quarters, leading to calls for a bandh, or shutdown, in Latur. Critics labeled Chavan's language as inappropriate, especially when referring to a leader known for maintaining cordial ties across party lines. The timing is sensitive, with elections for the Latur Municipal Corporation approaching, and observers believe the episode could sway local voter sentiment.
Fadnavis Draws a Clear Distinction
Addressing a public gathering in Latur, Devendra Fadnavis made a clear distinction between political rivalry and personal respect for senior leaders. He emphasized that while the BJP's contest is with the Congress party, Vilasrao Deshmukh commanded his personal admiration and respect.
"Deshmukh made an invaluable contribution to the making of Maharashtra. I have immense respect for him," Fadnavis stated. He underlined that Deshmukh's stature extended far beyond partisan politics, calling him a name that transcends party boundaries.
Clarification and Regret Over Remarks
Acknowledging the confusion and resentment caused during Ravindra Chavan's visit two days prior, Fadnavis offered a clarification. He explained that the party president had intended to speak about creating new political records, but his words were perhaps conveyed in the wrong manner. Fadnavis noted that Chavan had expressed regret over the incident.
The Chief Minister reiterated that despite political differences with the Congress, there was never any question of showing disrespect towards Vilasrao Deshmukh. He praised Latur as a land that has produced exemplary leadership for Maharashtra, recalling stalwarts like the late Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar who rose from grassroots politics to the highest offices.
In response to the controversy, Amit Deshmukh, the elder son of Vilasrao Deshmukh and a Congress MLA, appealed to protesters to express their anger through democratic means. He urged them not to inconvenience ordinary citizens over a mistake made by a BJP politician.
