Repolling in the Falta assembly constituency of West Bengal commenced on Saturday across all 285 polling booths, with tight security arrangements in place. The Election Commission ordered the repoll following reports of irregularities and violence during the initial phase of voting on May 13.
Voter Turnout and Security
Voters lined up at polling stations from early morning, with officials reporting a steady turnout. The state administration deployed central armed police forces to ensure peaceful polling. Additional surveillance measures, including CCTV cameras and micro-observers, were installed at sensitive booths.
Political Reactions
Leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Trinamool Congress (TMC), and Congress welcomed the repoll but traded allegations. BJP leaders accused TMC of previous booth capturing, while TMC claimed BJP workers intimidated voters. Congress appealed for free and fair voting.
As of 11 a.m., the voter turnout was approximately 30%, with officials expecting higher participation through the day. The repoll is crucial for the three major parties, as the constituency has seen close contests in past elections.
The Election Commission has set up 24x7 control rooms to monitor the process. Results are expected later this week.
