Farmers in Karnataka have launched a unique 'Silt Festival' at the Tungabhadra reservoir to protest against the accumulation of silt and demand government intervention. The event was organized by the Ballari Raitha Sangha in the Tungabhadra backwaters near Gunda Botanical Garden on Tuesday.
Farmers Demand Desilting Action
Speaking at the festival, a seer emphasized that farmers would be compelled to undertake desilting efforts themselves if the government failed to remove the accumulated silt. The silt buildup has reduced the reservoir's water storage capacity, affecting irrigation and farming activities in the region.
Call for Government Intervention
The Ballari Raitha Sangha has urged the state government to prioritize desilting of the Tungabhadra reservoir. Farmers warn that delayed action could lead to severe water shortages and impact agricultural productivity. The festival aims to draw attention to this critical issue through community participation and awareness.
The Tungabhadra reservoir, a key water source for irrigation in the region, has seen significant silt deposition over the years. Farmers argue that regular desilting is essential to maintain its storage capacity and ensure water availability for crops. The 'Silt Festival' serves as a peaceful protest and a call to action for authorities.
