Tragic Double Death in Jagtial: Farmer's Suicide Over Debt Leads to Mother's Fatal Heart Attack
In a devastating incident that underscores the severe distress plaguing farming communities, a 25-year-old farmer from Jagtial district died by suicide after consuming herbicide due to mounting debts and repeated crop failures. The tragedy deepened when his mother suffered a fatal heart attack while waiting for his body at the morgue on Wednesday.
Mounting Debts and Crop Failures Drive Farmer to Suicide
Dodla Sampath, a resident of Mothe village in Jagtial mandal, was reportedly overwhelmed by financial pressures. He had taken a hand loan of approximately 5 lakh rupees from a fellow villager for house construction, a burden compounded by successive crop failures that left him unable to repay the debt.
On Tuesday evening, around 6:30 PM, Sampath consumed herbicide on the outskirts of his village. Family members immediately rushed him to a local clinic for initial treatment. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to a private hospital in Karimnagar for more advanced care.
Despite medical efforts, Sampath succumbed to the poisoning on Wednesday afternoon while undergoing treatment, leaving his family in shock and grief.
Mother Collapses at Morgue, Succumbs to Heart Attack
Shortly after Sampath's body was shifted to the Jagtial government hospital for a postmortem examination, his mother, Dodla Mallavva (60), collapsed outside the mortuary. She complained of severe chest pain, likely triggered by the emotional trauma of her son's death.
Medical staff quickly moved Mallavva to the hospital's medical ward for emergency treatment. Tragically, she died while undergoing care, adding another layer of sorrow to the family's ordeal. The double death has left the community reeling, highlighting the profound impact of agricultural distress on mental and physical health.
Police Investigation and Family Notifications
Jagtial Rural ASI M Sathaiah confirmed that a case has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) in connection with Sampath's suicide. This legal step is part of standard procedure for such incidents, ensuring a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the tragedy.
The bodies of both Sampath and Mallavva have been handed over to their family members for last rites. Mallavva's elder son, Santosh, who works in Turkey, has been informed about the heartbreaking incident.
