Chatterjee's Response and Allegations

Ratna Chatterjee, who previously served as the MLA of Behala East after the last assembly elections, initially responded to the allegations by releasing a video statement. In it, she vehemently denied any involvement by the Trinamool Congress in the vandalism, instead accusing the BJP of inciting unrest in the area.

She stated, "I always thought the Election Commission was an autonomous body. If they are now acting on the BJP's instructions, what can be done?" This comment suggests her belief that the actions against her and her party workers are politically motivated, potentially influenced by pressure from the BJP.

Police Investigation and Incident Details

According to police reports, information was received by the Parnashree Police Station that some flags and flexes near the BJP party office on Upen Banerjee Road had been damaged by Trinamool Congress workers. The matter was promptly reported to the Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) of Behala West for further investigation.

During the incident, a police officer attempted to disperse the accused individuals but was unable to do so due to being outnumbered. When reinforcements from the Parnasree Police Station arrived at the scene, the suspects fled, leading to a subsequent manhunt and the arrests.

Political Reactions and Implications

The leader of the opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, commented on the situation, saying, "Cops were forced to make arrests under EC pressure. But, many have been released. Do not take law in your hands. Resist like this." This statement highlights the political tension surrounding the case, with Adhikari implying that the arrests were made under pressure from the Election Commission, yet criticizing the handling of the situation.

This incident adds to the ongoing political strife in Kolkata, particularly in the lead-up to elections, and raises questions about law and order, as well as the autonomy of electoral bodies. The FIR and arrests underscore the serious nature of the allegations, with potential legal and political repercussions for those involved.
