Deadly Firecracker Blast in Vetlapalem Claims 28 Lives, Linked to Temple Festival Preparations

A catastrophic explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Vetlapalem, Visakhapatnam district, has resulted in the tragic loss of 28 lives. The incident, which occurred on February 28, has been directly traced to preparations for the upcoming Singaramma Thalli Jatara festival in Mallisala village, located in Kakinada district.

Background of the Unit and Festival Contract

The firecracker unit was owned by brothers Adabala Srinivas and Adabala Veerababu, who have a long-standing history of supplying fireworks to the temple festival in their in-laws' village. For at least five years, the brothers held the exclusive contract to deliver customised firecrackers for this renowned event, which is celebrated for its elaborate and spectacular displays.

The Singaramma Thalli temple, situated in a reserve forest between Jaggampeta and Gokavaram, attracts thousands of devotees annually. The opening-day fireworks are a major highlight, featuring unique animal- and tree-shaped crackers that are set off for nearly an hour. Among the most popular attractions are a 15-foot snake-shaped cracker that emits venom-like sparks and a towering "eeta cheetu" (date palm) firecracker that bursts with intense light and sound. This year, the temple awarded the brothers a contract valued at nearly ₹2 lakh, underscoring the significance of their role in the festival.

Details of the Explosion and Investigation

The blast occurred around 2 pm on February 28 while the brothers were actively preparing the consignment, which was scheduled for delivery later that same evening. Police authorities suspect that the brothers stockpiled excessive explosive material to meet the high demand, treating the contract as a matter of prestige and honor. Their father, A Satyanarayana, who possessed considerable experience in the firecracker trade, died instantly in the explosion. Fortunately, the brothers were away from the unit at the time of the incident, escaping immediate harm.

Kakinada Superintendent of Police G Bindu Madhav provided crucial details regarding the licences held by the brothers. Srinivas, the proprietor of Surya Sri Fire Works, held an LE-1 licence for manufacturing fireworks, which was recently renewed in 2024. Veerababu, on the other hand, held an LE-5 licence for sales. Their father had previously worked in several firecracker units, giving the family a solid background in the trade. Building on this experience, the brothers obtained the necessary licences and jointly operated the business.

Police Statement and Suspected Causes

In an official statement, Superintendent of Police G Bindu Madhav explained, "Both the accused are sons-in-law of families from Mallisala village in Jaggampeta mandal. After receiving an order for firecracker materials for the Singaramma Thalli Jatara scheduled to be held at Mallisala on March 3, they increased production and manufactured a large quantity of fireworks, exceeding the permissible limits to meet the demand. Improper handling of pressure-sensitive explosive substances is suspected to have triggered shockwaves that set off nearby materials, ultimately leading to the explosion."

This tragic incident highlights the severe risks associated with the improper storage and handling of explosive materials, especially when production is ramped up beyond legal limits to fulfill prestigious contracts. The investigation continues as authorities work to determine the exact sequence of events and ensure accountability for this devastating loss of life.
