Five Jabalpur Boat Tragedy Victims' Bodies Reach Trichy

Trichy: The bodies of five victims of the boat tragedy near Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh were brought to Trichy on Saturday evening by a special aircraft. The victims, members of an extended family from Trichy and Tiruppur districts, drowned after a cruise boat capsized in the Narmada River near Bargi Dam on Thursday evening.

Identification of the Deceased

The deceased were identified as Kamaraj, 38, of Navalpattu near Thiruverumbur; his wife Karkuzhali, 38; their younger son Tamilvendhan, 5; Karkuzhali's relative Sowbhagya; and her son Mayuran. Kamaraj was employed as a mechanic at the Ordnance Factory explosives unit in Jabalpur.

Details of the Incident

Sources said the family had been hosting relatives from Dharapuram in Tiruppur district during the summer holidays. On April 30, they visited Bargi Dam and boarded a cruise boat around 5.30pm when it capsized mid-river under unclear circumstances. Two children — Bhuvidharan, 11, and Iniya — survived the incident as they were wearing life jackets.

The tragic event has left the community in mourning. The bodies were transported to Trichy with the help of local authorities and the state government. Investigations into the cause of the capsize are ongoing.
