Five Rajya Sabha Candidates Elected Unopposed from West Bengal
In a significant political development, five candidates for the Rajya Sabha were elected uncontested from West Bengal on Monday. This uncontested election saw four nominees from the Trinamool Congress and one from the Bharatiya Janata Party secure their positions without facing any opposition.
Certificate Distribution Ceremony Held in Kolkata
The assembly secretary formally presented the victory certificates to the elected candidates in Kolkata on Monday. Among those who received their certificates in person were Trinamool Congress candidates Rajeev Kumar, Babul Supriyo, and Koel Mallick, along with BJP candidate Rahul Sinha. Notably, Trinamool Congress candidate Maneka Guruswamy was unable to attend the ceremony as she was not present in Kolkata. On her behalf, power minister Aroop Biswas accepted the victory certificate, ensuring all elected representatives were duly recognized.
Transition of Terms and Upcoming Vacancies
The terms of the newly elected Rajya Sabha members are scheduled to begin in early April. This transition coincides with the expiration of terms for several current MPs from West Bengal. Specifically, on April 2, the terms of Trinamool Congress MPs Subrata Bakshi, Saket Gokhale, and Ritabrata Banerjee, as well as CPM MP Bikash Bhattacharya, will come to an end. Additionally, it is worth noting that Trinamool Congress MP Mausam Noor had previously resigned from the Rajya Sabha in January after joining the Congress party, creating an earlier vacancy.
This uncontested election underscores the current political dynamics in West Bengal, where major parties have secured representation without electoral contest. The smooth transition of these Rajya Sabha seats highlights the procedural aspects of parliamentary appointments in the state, setting the stage for new legislative contributions from the elected members as they assume their roles next month.
