Flooded Paddy Fields and Land Conversion Row Take Center Stage at Azossim-Mandur Gram Sabha

The Azossim-Mandur panchayat gram sabha, held on Sunday, was dominated by two critical issues affecting the local community: extensive flooding of paddy fields in Dongorim and a contentious land conversion proposal approved by the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Department. The meeting, chaired by Sarpanch Prashant Naik, saw heated discussions as residents voiced their concerns over environmental and agricultural impacts.

Damaged Sluice Gate Leads to Severe Flooding in Dongorim

Member Satish Naik raised allegations regarding the persistent flooding of paddy fields in Dongorim, attributing the problem to an open sluice gate at the Damda khazan. Despite a mamlatdar's order for repairs, the damaged gate has left fields submerged, with saline water encroaching near residential areas. Villagers suspect sabotage, as the sluice gate was found missing its doors, exacerbating the crisis.

Although temporary planks have been installed to block the water flow, the fields remain under water, threatening agricultural productivity and local livelihoods. In response, Sarpanch Prashant Naik announced that the panchayat will formally write to the concerned authorities, urging immediate action to address the flooding and ensure proper maintenance of the sluice gate to prevent future incidents.

TCP's Land Conversion Approval Sparks Opposition

Another major point of contention was the TCP's approval to convert 72,000 square meters of village land into a green area. The sarpanch stated that the panchayat plans to oppose this land-use change by writing to the department, citing potential adverse effects on the village's landscape and resources.

The land in question contains an illegal structure, which has been a subject of intense debate in recent panchayat meetings. At a meeting in November last year, members discussed a demolition notice issued after member Ramrao Wagh filed a complaint about the unauthorized construction.

Members expressed apprehension that converting this land could increase pressure on adjacent hilly and forested areas, potentially leading to environmental degradation and disrupting local ecosystems. The panchayat's stance reflects a broader concern over preserving village integrity and preventing unchecked development.

Community Calls for Accountability and Sustainable Solutions

The gram sabha highlighted the community's demand for greater accountability from authorities in managing infrastructure and land-use policies. Residents emphasized the need for sustainable solutions that balance development with environmental conservation, ensuring the protection of agricultural lands and natural habitats.

As the panchayat moves forward with official communications to address both issues, the outcomes of these efforts will be closely watched by villagers, who seek resolution to the flooding crisis and a halt to controversial land conversions that could alter their village's character.
