Gaurav Gogoi's Defeat in Assam: Congress's Decline and BJP's Rise
Gaurav Gogoi's Defeat: Congress's Shrinking Footprint in Assam

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Gaurav Gogoi was warmly welcomed in Jorhat as 'amar lora' (our son), embodying the hopes of the Congress party. As the deputy leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and the chief ministerial face of Congress in Assam, he carried the legacy of his father, former chief minister Tarun Gogoi. However, by the 2026 assembly elections, this emotional connection failed to translate into votes, marking a significant setback for the grand old party.

Why Gogoi's Defeat Matters

Gogoi was not just another candidate; he was Congress's best hope to challenge the dominance of Himanta Biswa Sarma. As a three-term MP and former deputy leader of the opposition, he brought both experience and expectation. Yet, he lost by a staggering margin of 23,182 votes to BJP's Hitendra Nath Goswami. This defeat ended his attempt to transition from national to state politics, a move seen as crucial for Congress's revival in Assam.

After the loss, Gogoi took full moral responsibility, stating, 'As the state Congress president, I take full moral responsibility. I also thank our political workers who gave their full potential.' He expressed gratitude to voters and workers, adding, 'We accept the people's mandate. Congress will reach out to those who did not vote for us.' He also hinted at internal unease, noting that people had not accepted the result and that the party would call newly elected MLAs to discuss the outcome.

The Party's Fortress Crumbled

The defeat of Debabrata Saikia in Nazira, another son of a former chief minister, further underscored Congress's decline. Saikia, leader of the opposition since 2016, lost his family stronghold to BJP's Mayur Borgohain. For decades, Upper Assam was Congress's fortress, but in 2026, that bastion crumbled. Congress lost almost all assembly segments under Gogoi's Lok Sabha constituency, except Sivasagar, where ally Akhil Gogoi held ground. Another ally, Lurinjyoti Gogoi, lost in Khowang.

Congress managed to win just 19 seats, down from 29 in 2021, with most victories coming from Muslim-majority constituencies. Its once broad-based coalition has shrunk into a limited, regionally concentrated vote bank.

The Scale of BJP's Dominance

In contrast, the BJP-led NDA surged ahead, securing 102 seats in the 126-member assembly, with the BJP alone winning 82—crossing the majority mark on its own for the first time in Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma retained his Jalukbari seat by a margin of 89,434 votes, reaffirming his political dominance. Sarma's rise, since leaving Congress in 2015, has reshaped Assam's electoral dynamics through welfare delivery and sharp political messaging.

Why Gogoi's Strategy Fell Short

The BJP framed Gogoi, Akhil Gogoi, and Lurinjyoti Gogoi as the '3G' trio, a politically loaded label. The campaign portrayed Congress as aligned with 'Miya' Muslims (Bengali-speaking Muslims of migrant origin), influencing voter perception and making it harder for Congress to expand beyond Muslim-majority constituencies. Gogoi's perceived inaccessibility and reliance on legacy and identity politics, particularly his Ahom roots, also failed to yield results.

Impact of Delimitation

The 2023 delimitation reduced Muslim-majority constituencies from 35 to 22, narrowing Congress's electoral space. While Muslims account for around 30% of Assam's electorate, their concentration in fewer seats has politically isolated the party.

Alliance Strategy Under Scrutiny

Congress's six-party alliance, formed at the last minute, failed to create a unified alternative. Fragmentation within the opposition helped the BJP, as seen in 2021 when the opposition's vote share was close to the NDA's but led to a significant seat gap. The alliance lacked coherence and mass appeal, despite attempts to field younger candidates like Kunki Chowdhury and Gyanashree Bora.

Personal Attacks

The campaign saw personal allegations from Sarma, who targeted Gogoi over his UK-born wife, Elizabeth Colebourn. Sarma alleged that a Pakistan-based firm employed her and that Gogoi visited Pakistan clandestinely in 2013. These attacks further polarized the electorate.

The Scale of Congress's Defeat

The NDA's victory pushed the opposition into one of its weakest positions. Congress won only 19 seats, while allies Raijor Dal secured two, AIUDF two, and Trinamool Congress one. Political observers noted the opposition's failure to produce a leader matching Sarma's dominance. Gogoi's political career began in 2014 with a victory from Kaliabor, and he later shifted to Jorhat in 2024, but the 2026 defeat marked a major setback.

With Congress losing three consecutive assembly elections since 2016, the party faces a difficult rebuilding exercise. It must rethink its political messaging, rebuild grassroots structures, and forge a broader social coalition to remain relevant by 2031. Otherwise, Assam could witness even stronger BJP consolidation.
